We got a new puppy a few days ago, and our 2 year old doggie is having trouble adjusting. She won't play with the new puppy, and any time the puppy comes up to me or my husband while we are playing with our older dog, the older dog just walks away and pouts. Does anyone have any ideas about ways we can help our older dog adjust to her new brother?

Shes probably feeling left out or like old news. Try taking them on walks together or basically things that will get them to bond. And time, just time. Could you imagine having someone bring another person into your home and expect you to want to play with him or her right off the bat?

In addition to the good words of wisdom written above, I'll just add that if you associate the new puppy with really good times and good treats to your other dog, that can improve her opinion of him. Whenever the pup comes around close, give your other dog a super tasty treat and some extra attention. When puppy is not right there in the room or too close, make things a little boring. In other words, "Wow....this puppy is terrific to have around. All kinds of great things happen. Things are looking up. I sure like this puppy." LOL.

Also, be sure to not only take them on walks together, but have some one on one time with each so neither feels left out. They should both adjust with time, patience and gentle handling. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I figured time would be the best thing. I have been making sure that the new puppy knows Jena (the older dog) is the "pack leader" of the two. Jena gets fed first, gets greeted first, and gets to walk through the door first at the advice of a trainer at Petsmart. Jena is starting to warm up to her new brother. They are trying to figure out how to play together. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before our new puppy has learned how to play with his big sis.
