Hello everyone,

I am glad I wondered across this forum. It is a wealth of information. I have a new pup who is 9 weeks old today.

House training & crate training is going well I think, my only problem involves my 13 year old Maltese who wants absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the pup. Unless separated, the pup will constantly pester my Maltese and seems to have no fear. My maltese growls and snaps, but has not bitten; but this does not deter the pup.

When they are in the same room together I have to constantly play referree which is getting a little tiring. The pup spends most of his time in my office baracaded so he cannot get out and so I can keep an eye on him. My Maltese sleeps on the other side of the baracade. This is working well while I am working (I work from home 8 hours a day), but when we are in the family room or kitchen it is another matter. I believe my pup is wanting to play fight and my Maltese wants nothing to do with it.

Is this behavior that my pup will eventually outgrow? Is there a way I can stop him of it?

My pup is a beagle mix not sure with what. He is brown & white with white belly & white legs. His legs have brown freckles, similar to a basset, so I am thinking that might be the other half and he has fairly good sized paws. He has a beagle bark though.

Welcome to Chaz !! I'm sure someone will give you some ideas ....I really think your Maltese is just trying to teach the pup manners. I really don't think they will hurt each other .

If that is the case, I don't think it is working. She will run from him to get away, and he just thinks that is a game. She really wants him to leave her alone and I am afraid it is stressful for her. At 9 weeks he is already bigger than her though just slightly.

For the first couple of weeks after we got Daisy my five year old tri-pod dog Danner would growl and snap at her everytime Daisy would try to play with him. If she would go lay down next to him, he would get up and run away. I started thinking that we had made the biggest mistake of our lives to bring this little puppy into a house with a big grumpy dog. I didn't keep the dogs seperated from each other I let him teach her what was okay and what was not (with supervision of course) and now they are great friends. They play together, Danner is more active, and he will even let Daisy lay with him on his bed!

Thank you, that has given me something to think about. She does act a bit on the jealous side and inspects all his new puppy toys. Maybe I am making a bigger fuss over this than is necessary.
