Hi There

I'm Kaz and my four legged friend is Meg. She is 7 years old and suffering from separation anxiety.

It has not helped that I have recently moved into my boyfriends flat. Before that I stayed at home and there was usually always someone there as my Dad works night shift. She always barked when we left the house but did not realise just how bad she was.

We do not leave Meg home while we go to work, she goes back to my Mum and Dads and we pick her up on way home. Problem is if we go out to shops etc. We dare not go out for more that an hour as do not want to upset the neighbours again. Left her once for 2 hours and neighbour came to complain (who can blame her i guess).

She was abandoned at a couple days old and hand reared. Vet has told me Meg see's me as her surrogate mum. Did not advise that this was a bad thing. Only now reading things on net I realise it might be.

Anyway sorry to waffle on. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Kaz x

How old is Meg? Also, is she crate-trained?

I would suggest spending some time in her crate while you guys are home...maybe 15 or 20 minutes at a time, 4 or 5 times a day while you're home for couple months. I used this method with success with a similar problem.

I'm sure there will be better advice posted, though.

It says she is 7 years old. Good advice, I can't think of anything... but while she's crated music and a kong with food in it helps too.:)

Meg is 7 years old and no she's not crate trained. Have only really heard about in past few months, friend at work got a pup and they use it while at work. Think it would cause Meg more stress if i started using one??? Could be wrong though

If she's never been crated it likely wouldn't be comfortable for her for a while...but she would get used to it. It would just require a slow introduction and a lot of patience.

When starting to get her use to the crate, dont close the door on her at first. Try putting some treats in there and let her get in there on her own without shutting the door for a while.

Kaz, you might want to post this in the training section. You will get more help there.
I can't move this as I'm not a mod on this section. Sorry!
