I don't like it. Parts of it I agree with, but other parts are just disgusting.

The parts I like:
-Illegal immigrants cannot participate in state-funded aid programs (like welfare, etc.) I think that's fair, since those programs were designed for citizens.
-Harsher penalties for those who smuggle the aliens in. Those coyotes are mostly scum anyway, so no problem there.

The parts I don't like:
-Being an illegal immigrant would become a felony. I think that's way overboard.
-Churches must check the status of its parishoners, and cannot give aid to illegals. Grr. That is just wrong. Aid to those is need is a fundamental part of Christianity.

I'm glad to see all those peaceful demonstrations against the legislation. That one in LA was spectacular. I hope this legislation dies, quickly.

Agree with you 100% Gempress!

It also needs to be a felony - on top of the hefty fines - for corporations to hire and solicit the importations of illegals for labor. These are the people who keep the coyotes and compradores in business!

Making it a felony to be an illegal immigrant? That gives ground for a good discussion.

But I don't think churches should aid illegal immigrants either. There are enough homeless citizens that need aid. Or money could be out towards more education to keep at risk juveniles out of prison.

The church part i do not agree with at all since that is what they are there for. But the rest of it doens't seem so bad. If it isn't going to get them in trouble what will deter them?

Being deported as an illegal right now is about as serious a penalty as there can be for these people. Once you've been deported as an illegal, you won't be considered for any sort of legal immigration.

Ah, yes, Canada would be different, lol! Here in the US, once you've been deported you can forget trying to get in legally - unless, of course, you come in under another identity, which doesn't seem to be that difficult to do

I don't think this legislation should apply to churches. They don't get federal funding, so the government shouldn't be able to tell them who they can and cannot help. Imposing bureaucratic bs on churches is going way too far.

You now my position on this topic. Yet, this bill is STUPID.

These are all things I agree with. Sorry about the felony thing, but in this age I feel we cannot compromise.

-Churches must check the status of its parishoners, and cannot give aid to illegals. Grr. That is just wrong. Aid to those is need is a fundamental part of Christianity.
This.... I do not see how this is even Constitutional. Can you see the NYT headline and photos the first time the INS raids a church?

PRESIDENT BUSH!! PLEASE SECURE THE F___ING BORDER. That way, you can stop violating our civil rights, asshole. Do something about the people here now, build a big SECURE wall. Put lots of bad dudes with big guns on it and make people follow the proper process for coming in. How can the bad guys bomb us if they cannot get into the country???

Am I the only one who sees this? (Granted, I have not read the rest of the thread yet...)

I have not been paying a lot of attention to this. Who sponsored this bill and please tell me it did not even make it out of comittee. I am all over it now. LOL

(I bet this is not how you all thought I would react to this, eh?) LOL

**** who cares? Like immigration legislation has ever had any effect on aliens anyway.

Besides...the guys here illegally are 10 times the workers as the folks here legally! We've got at least 12 people in the company that have either lied about their employment eligibillity or have been "in the process of gaining citizenship" for years and they are, hands down, the best people to work with. They do twice the work as everyone else, have a REAL work ethic, their wives are badass cooks, they much friendlier, they're PROUD of being in the US and they're honest. All the legals and "born here's" are total assholes, wusses, ****-ass workers, would steal the shirt off your back and and they're not very bright...they also don't speak english...wtf?

You do know that the big "bombings" in the states (OKC, 9/11, etc.) were all done by people here legally, right?

Drugs laws do little to deter drugs, yet it is still on the books.

Murder is illegal, yet it happens.

Your logic fails me.

Of course I do. What is your point? Are you saying we should NOT secure our borders and let the government continue to violate our civil rights instead?
