for the record, dipthong, i started hog hunting 31 years ago w/ curs & bulldogs. i have seen pits & american bulldogs that could run a track better than ALL the dogos i've run w/. the most dominating & impressive running catch dog i have ever seen was a presa canario by a large margin. hell the red dog in the second pic dove under water under a tree to catch a dog killer sized hog on the same hunt. i had to slap him off 3 times yanking him under the tree each time before he stayed off long enough for my partner to pull it out into the stream so we could tie it. and i have yet to see any bullbreed dog that is remotely in the same class of working wind & running a track as any of the blackmouth or catahoula curdogs i listed earlier. you start looking at hunting only lines of curs like kemmer & stephens stock Mt curs or leopard curs or plotts ot tennesse brindles or canadians and many of them can cold trail w/ good hounds.
just because most everyone else on here has very limited hunting experiences doesn't mean they can't see the massengil tatoo on your forehead.
heck the only reason i'm even on this thread (or the board much) is because the hunting keeps getting rained out. at this point i'd airburst a nuke just to dry things out if i could.
I don't think I could ever let a dog I owned hunt hogs (I would worry to death before we killed the pig) but man you have to hand it to the dogs that do. Any dog that will grab on to one of the big boars and hold on until help arrives is amazing. Talk about tenacity.

The Massengil tatoo rib is :rofl1:

Thank you Smkie. Although I'm not against hunting in any way, (I wish I could do it so I could have meat in the freezer) it still upsets me to see a dead animal up close. When I've hit squirrels on the road, it upsets me the whole day through. I guess I'm a wimp. :(

Doesn't mean you are a wimp just empathetic. Hunting is needed especially for Wild Boar because man is the only thing remotely able to hold this evasive species in check.

Nothing wrong with enjoying the hunt or knowing you killed a threat (to other animals and crops) but I don't think it would be healthy to get enjoyment out of seeing an intelligent animal suffer and/or die IMHO.

Does he really mean Hunting humans? It bothers me when he said,

"I am breeding the first F1 generation designer dog with the purpose
of creating the ultimate family survival and protection dog".

then,

"intelligence with
tenacity able to hunt human or animal and protect against both"...

Scary...

believe it or not the blood wore out of the dogos over the week end. the two shown are from repeat breedings of de calfucara in Argentina. the owners are friends of mine. the dogo in the second pic (Mikey) was retired about 2 years ago, has done OB & Schutzhund his owner titled the first Sch 3 dogo in america. he has also caught & held a fleeing felon being chased by an off duty PD dispatcher in CA. the dogo in the first pic is from a repeat breeding about 2 years after the one that produced Mikey. Brigus is the second most impressive catch dog i've ever seen. he hits hard & locks down. the sweet lady who owned him only started hunting because she felt it unfair to take a working bred dog & not let him do what he was bred for. she also does OB w/ him.
the red dog was a catahoula over american bulldog. i picked him up for $50 in LA as his "breeder" had simply crossed his best baydog to his catchdog and wound up w/ about 4 more pups than he expected. Jack was a ladies dog. he adored my daughters and would have killed any man entering the house uninvited. he took me to the floor as 35# pup when i was tickling my older daughter on the couch. he grabbed my arm and pulled my around off balance & down. at that point he realized what was going on outed himself & went to his bed . he sat there and wouldn't look at me. i couldn't get mad as he thought he was protecting my daughter & he only grabbed hard enough to pull & never broke the skin. through his entire life anytime i raised my voice or sent my girls to put their nose on the wall he would stand beside them & bark his disapproval at me. he broke several 1/4 steel aircraft cable tiedowns ( i made my own) and nearly broke a 1/4" steel chain when the neighbor he liked was spanking his own daughter in his adjoining backyard so his devotion was to al children not just mine. unfortunately i lost him to a brain tumor right after this hunt. but he is the standard all future dogs will be measured against. side note the dead hog is the only one we killed as it was killing other hogs at the feeder (including the 90@ sow we ate for lunch). the rest were caught tied & sold to a hunting lodge. the dead hog had taint so it was used for dog food.
Sonic the black dog is a linebred mix of saluki & greyhound. his sire (also his maternal grandsire) was a beast hare & coyote dog out of IL. his breeder gave him to me on the condition i hunt him & she had free breeding rights if he turned out excellent or better.
he has caught squirrel, rabbit, possum, raccoon, feral cats, grey fox, boar and 1 mule deer doe. unfortunately i have a better nose than he does so unless i can spotlight them off of golf courses & crop fields he won't do much good hogging. he soft as cotton toward kids (well really everybody). he has some deficiencies that i determined made him not breedworthy & so has been nuetered. some fox & coon pics can be found here, be advised they may not be suitable for all audiences.

While I enjoyed all of your photos, the dogo in the driver's seat and the GSD spotting for the sniper made me smile ;)

although it does sometimes happen mutilation isn't the object of hunting w/ the dogs. in fact the dead hog was killed by the dogo's owner using a knife. he's being allowed to chew on the dead hog as a reward (it's called wooling).

Sorry SMKIE. i will warn in the future.

And you my dear sound like a socialist loving obama supporter with you head in the sand about the upcoming upheaval in the country because of the destruction of our way of life by the communist factions trying to destroy or constitution and are not prepared for
the unrest to come
You're protecting the country from the democrats by adding to the ever growing number of homeless mutts (and purebreds) dying in shelters every day??

My Hero. [/sarcasm]

Actually, your dogs would probably eat me, because..
I support Obama. :yikes:

Carry on.

Personally after being attacked by a Dogo, and having had my dog attacked by a Dogo, they wouldn't be a dog that I would like to own.. I'm not saying that it's a bad breed, all Dogo's are evil etc.. But they aren't the sort of dog I personally would trust enough to leave in a room with a small child alone.

Gus is a Shepherd x Ridgeback, and although he is very clever, and very drivey.. He's also incredibly wimpy! LOL! You should see him when there's thunder or fireworks, cowering under the table.. A SUPERB guard dog!! ;)

This thread got me thinking about designer dogs. Some designer breeds are just for looks. How about someone that is trying to breed a working dog.... like Swinford (John Swinford). Is a Kennel like Chimera Kennels - Home just a puppymill or is he pioneer to make a first rate working dog.

Aren't a lot of reconized breeds today like the Presa and the Dogo and even the APBT and GSD relatively recent creations?

Not sure on this one myself....just going to toss it out there for discussion.

I guess that would be what one might consider "recent" AMStaffer, LOL

A quick search shows that Presa's are dated back to the 15th and 16th centuries! They went nearly extinct and were carefully repopulated starting around 1970ish.........so I wouldn't consider them to be recent.

Source: Presa Canario History Brought to you by Crown Presa Canario

The other dogs you've listed are much younger as a breed.........but still at least 100 years old or more, so it all depends on what you consider "recent" LOL

I think I see/get your point though. These breeds started "somewhere" with the idea of someone...........but that someone should have 1/2 a brain, and resources, and be creating for a PURPOSE another dog cannot competently fill in this day and age of over population IMO. It was a far different world 100 years ago.............

I have no problem with cross breeding or creating a new breed for a purpose but it needs to be done right and by people with clear goals and appropriate breeding practices. I don't even have a problem with creating new companion dogs, they don't have to have a working purpose. But I know a lot of people disagree.

I wouldn't have a problem if someone bred a dog specifically to eat mother in laws, and only mother in laws.. ;)
