Hi everyone! My name is Jerrica and my dogs names are Ripley (Chiweenie) and Owen (Mini Boxer). I just found out this weekend that Owen (9 months) has demodex mites. I have him on medicine and the outlook is bright. I was just hoping someone who has been through this before, or know someone who has, could give me some advice, info or encouragement. I'm very upset, but at the same time, trying to look to the brightside. Any advice? Thanks!

All dogs and some humans for that matter carry the demodex mite. The difference between dogs that show symptoms and the dogs that don't is immune system. Dogs with healthy, strong immune systems can keep the demodex population at bay while dogs with compromised immune systems can not. Did your vet tell you if your dog's demodex is generalized or localized. Generalized is more serious. With either they can make a full recovery, but generalized is more serious and sometimes harder to treat.

Dealing with a breed (pugs) that suffer from demodex on a regular basis I truly believe that diet and supplements can play a huge role in boosting the immune system. I have been lucky enough to completley avoid demodex in my household, but a lot of my pug friends have not.

I would recommend you seek out a very high quality food like California Natural, Canidae, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold or Innova. I would also recommend you try using Solid Gold Life Exxtension as a supplement for the immune system. You can find info on this at www.solidgoldhealth.com.

I also personally feel that Ivermectin is a much more effective treatment than Mitaban dip.

Best of Luck and welcome to Chaz.:)

Thank you for the info. Right now I have him on Eqvalin Elixor and an antibotic for a rash. I will look into the supplements, that sounds like a great idea. The doctor didn't tell me if it is generalized or localized, but I will call and find out. It's mostly on his head and there is also a place on his leg. He is in great spirits and acts like nothing is wrong, but I worry about him.

For the question earlier, a chiweenie is a chihuahua and dachshund and my mini boxer is a mix also, but I'm not sure of what. I've heard different things like a boxer and boston terrier, but I've also heard beagle and boston terrier. Either way they're both precious!

In that pic, he was about 5 months. Now he is 1 and 4 months. He hasn't grown too much since then. He stayed at about 12 pounds. Lizzie is adorable as well, I love the way y'all have your pics displayed!
