Our 1.5 yr old mutt, Gerorge, is intact. My DH could not bear the thought of the procedure, so we haven't had it done.

Lately George exhibits more aggressive behavior towards other dogs (not all dogs mind you, just some).

Would this behavior be eliminated or alleviated if we were to get him fixed?

Thanks!

I do believe that neutering would help the situation. It is best to neuter before the age of 6 months in order to curb the agressiveness before it begins, but it would still help to have the procedure done now.
I know someone who had a 1 year old, aggressive, unfixed male and had him neutered. His behavior is so much better now after the surgery.
Dogs really do not think like men... it does not affect them emotionally to be castrated... dogs do not use human psychology and do not think the way that we do about these things. George will not mind a bit that his testicles are gone, it will not affect him.

There is no need for anyone to keep an intact mix - so nuetering is the best way to go.

I believe that if you had him altered earlier - these signs of aggresion may not have happened as well.

Depending on what type of aggresion he is showing it could be territorial, male only aggresion - it could also be the way that hes learned as well.

How are you dealing with it right now?

My Male Belgian has slight "dominance" problems around other males and he'll get vocal. I feel that if he was fixed it would stop his vocalness and he'd be able to just relax and play with them. But he wont be fixed b/c he is a show dog going for his Can Ch title.

Definately speak to your vet about getting him fix asap b/f things escalte :)

From what I understand neutering is a 50/50 once the dogs gets over a certain age.

When done before the testosterone levels begin to rise your chances are much much higher. But the longer you wait, the less your chances are that neutering will help with aggression or "ranginess".

I say neuter him anyways. As Summer mentioned, there's no need to have an intact pet. :)

It may help, it may not. But the best thing you can do is begin training! Work! Working with your dog is a fun, easy, physically challenging way to show who's in charge. It's not physically aggressive or dominant, but in a more subtle way, while working with your dog your sending them the message that you are in charge! YOU tell them what to do! YOU hand out all of the treats and praise!

Good luck! :D

Plus, if he did happen to get around a female in heat, they would not be able to reproduce. I've heard so many stories of people with unaltered males who have escaped and added to the overpopulation of homeless pets.

Also dogs can get testicular cancer the same as people can. By eliminating the testicals, you eliminate the problem thus dodging another potential bullet down the road.

Ya'll are preaching to the choir here. Dh is the one who'd have to take him into the clinic as I'd be working on those days it is open.

When he starts to get a bit aggressive, we re-direct him, make him sit and look at us, then move him away from the situation.

it may help, but the longer you let it go, the less likely it'll be to help because the behavior will have become habit. it's most likely not going to fix the problem, but it's an easy enough step to take to try to lessen it.

Okay; I see your problem and I can totally understand it. It is typical of most men not to want themselves being altered any less than that of their dog.:lol-sign:

With a result that the dog is now becoming aggressive. Now you have to understand every one elses veiws here as well. So to make things easier try this! But if it does not work you will have too have a serious discussion with the husband. If not you are going to run into several issues and problems.

1) Take the dog out for a walk. You see someone else with a dog preferably a male. Now you have your dog at a perfect sit beside you. He lets out one vocal. You give the dog a quick NO. Nothing else. He gets Louder, then do it again. This time a quick check to your training equiptment.

2) When walking your dog, always have him focus on you and nothing else. Sure he can look around that's fair in love and war. It is up to you to teach your dog to ignore other dogs. Once you have that area down pat you should have little or no problems with this area at all.

Now if the dogs attitude continues; You best get the dog into these areas and do it fast.

1) Dog behavioral councilor trainer
2) ALTERED
3) Or get the dog taken away from you via animal control if your dog goes out and randomly attacks any dog at any time even if on leash The dog at that time can be listed as a VICIOUS ANIMAL. Then if that happens you will be sued. Here in Canada one Doggie Scratch. Not even a punctured bite justifies a $300.000.00 law suit. To be assured the victum will prevail if that is the case. I am just stating this to you do to the fact that we as doggie owners must be responsible and if he is acting out like this it is time to do something and do it fast. No one is trying to pick on you they are just looking at the situation at a broad aspect for all concerned

So yes you had asked a question which was a ligit one at that. But we are only trying our best to caution you in the area of concern.
