My vet recommended that we neuter our 6 year old German Shepherd for an ongoing prostrate problem he was having. We decided to have our other three year old german shepherd done also. In no time they both seemed to have dry, lusterless coats. I have had to give them skin pills ever since. Nothing had changed in their diets and their coats almost 2 years later still don't look as good as pre-neutered. Is this Normal?

Have you had their thyroids checked?
I second this.

I have read studies that neutering can TRIPLE the chances of thyroid disease in dogs. And thyroid issues can cause skin issues. Nothing meds can't fix though :)

I would have it checked.

Have you tried changing their diet to see if that helps at all? Let us know what the vet says so we can learn from this too!

I don't know of any reason why neutering would cause dry skin. Sounds like a coincidence.
I thought this also except nothing else had changed including their diet and both started having dry skin and lusterless coats after being neutered. I had never had dogs neutered before either. I hope the vet can help.
