Neuter females, yes
Neuter males, no.

What? Why? I neutered both of my boy dogs because I didn't want them humping everything in sight! Keep your dog in it's glory, don't tell others not to!! Haven't you heard "Spay or neuter your pet"? If you plan on breeding your dog then thats another story

neutering is just as beneficial for males as spaying is for females. the reasons are the same.

personally i just think that a lot of male dog owners have hangups about getting their dogs neutered, and it's not about the dog at all, but the thought of losing the "family jewels" so to speak. :D of course that's silly, because the dog isn't going to miss anything, but some guys think they aren't macho enough walking a dog without the "dangly bits". lol

Totally true! When I worked at the vet clinic we saw this scenario over a hundred times. We even had to agree to do "neuticle" surgery in order to get one owner to neuter his dog. He spent 3 times the price of a normal neuter just to have the fake testicles put in!

awww....sorry mordy, you lost her, ill try my best to get it done but I checked my acc today and I only have EUR 100/- :(
You don't have to get it done TODAY but the sooner the better. Try calling shelters and humane societies. They might help with the cost or have better prices.

well the vets charges are ridiculously high here, just bringing her for vacinattion already cost me EUR 140 and a small check ups and some med for her diarrhoe cost me EUR80-90. So i can imagine a spay would cost me much :(

Well Wings,
Everyone has given you great advice. I can see that you want to do the best for your baby. We have all had money problems at some point or another.
Speaking of un-neutered boys, YUCK! It is a pet peeve of mine. I can not stand an un-neutered anything (not that it is the pet's fault, but it bugs me when people don't get it done), but an un-neutered male is the worst. I do not like seeing three dangly things under there. I rest easier every night knowing Spud has only one dangler. And, it hasn't affected his "manhood" in any way. :D

Just checked with the vet, the surgery cost EUR240/= :(

Gonna check if there is a pet insurance that covers it or at least some of it

This might sound like a stupid question...but...when a dog is spayed, do they take everything out all of the time...ovaries...ect? Also, do dogs suffer from hormonal changes like a human...menopause....etc?
Dena here is a pic of my beautiful little Nalla 4 days after her spay. I was worried, she had developed her boobs, and had confiscated every animal in my home and they were her litter. She is now down to only 2 babies (by her choosing). I was worried but many wise wise ones here helped me understand what she must of been going through. I dont regret at all having it done, she was almost 2 when we had her spayed (just 3 weeks ago) but glad it is done.

I dont plan on breeding my male labrador, but due to circumstances, I have to leave him intact in order to run the hunt tests and field trials. I hope none of you see a problem with this as when he attains his HRCH title he will likely be retired at that point and be de-sexed.

I understand by keeping him intact he runs a risk of testicular cancer and other problems. I dont have a problem with dangly things hanging underneath, and others shouldnt either.

I don't know why I shouldn't have a problem with little dangly things. They just annoy me, when there is really no need for them to be there unless it is a breeding/show dog. I didn't have Spud when he got neutered, but if I would have had him when he had danglers, I would have had the little boys removed for sure.

No. Don't spay your dog. The more humane thing to do is don't let her out of the house when she is in "heat". Spaying is just an excuse for people who don't have much time for their dogs. If you could give your dog the proper attention he or she needs their is no need to spay. Breeding will not occur if you can keep her at bay.
God gave your dog its reproductive system. It is cruel and inhumane to take it away. You just need to watch for her "heat" period which lasts for a couple of weeks and occurs every 4-6 months. That is not very hard to do.

Bow : But if you read wat the other members say, its a health hazzard for the dog itself like cancer and all, so its a good thing to get the neuter done and they will not suffer in the long run. It is maybe a lil cruel to cut her up to take away her reproduction system but its for her good.
Also its rather difficult to keep a close watch at her since she goes out for doggy walk with a walking service when I'm at work. Its not the service reponsibility to watch her.
