My family and I are going on vacation in 2 days. My 1 year old dog will be in a kennel for a week. I feel bad that I'm doing it. How do most dogs adjust? Do they feel abandoned?

Luckily we found a doggie hotel kind of place. They take the dogs out 8 times a day. They each have their own room and the top half of the door is always open. I hope my dog will be O.K.

It sounds like the place that you've chosen is going to be awesome.

Just make sure that your dog is up to date on all his vaccines including bordatella and he should be fine :)

Is your dog on any type of flea/intesntinal parasite prevention at all?

Depending on how your dogs personality is, they should do fine.
Long as the kennel provides the pup attention, they should do fine :)

I'm sure you could also call in to see how they are doing as well!

I dont think I would be able to ever leave RIot in a kennel type situation..
Hes an excellent escape artist for the unknowing person..
I had him at work (vet clinic) in a kennel and one of the vets went down to see him and as he opened the kennel door, Riot darted out so quickly he couldn't catch him.. Riot went on the search for me lol
I could only imagine what would happen to him if he tried that in a kennel type situation and him getting out lol

From working in and managing kennels for the past few years, I'm sure your dog will be fine. Dogs who can't adjust (especially to some apparently posh digs like the one you've found) are few and far between. Most dogs do just fine in kennel environments that have specialized human contact.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me. I can let you know what I like to see in a kennel, and can probably answer most questions for you.

Ditto to what SisMorphine is saying. I currently work at a posh boarding resort and while there are some dogs that don't do well being boarded, most dogs adjust just fine and go on to have a great time.

Ask if you can call to check up on him or something like that.

Thanks to all for your replies. My dog is on heartworm(Interceptor), flea and tick medication(Advantix). Is there another medication I should put him on?

If this stay at the kennel does not work out, you can always check the doggie sitters in your area. I have always had a sitter come in for each of my dogs. I am in the process now of training one of my neighbor's teenage daughters to dog sit so she can earn money for college. She loves it and so does my animals. Just another suggestion. Have a great vacation.

Nope, those should do just fine. :)

Don't be stressed out over this, or the dog will pick it up. We have so many dogs that are little hellions when around their parents, but after a few hours of being with us, they calm down, warm up and quit trying to bite the people who want to play with them. It's a direct feed off the negative emotions of the owners.
