My husband is threatening to get rid of my dogs, I need some help!

For some reason, the devil seems to have invaded my two dogs this week. They have reeked havoc at every opportunity. From chewing up two full rolls of toilet paper, to peeing and pooping in the house, to destroying my husbands sleep apnea machine, to constantly play fighting through the night keeping us awake. This has all happened this week and this is NOT their normal behavior.

I do not know what is wrong, but I need to know how to fix it before my husband sends them away!

I think their over hyperactivity may have somethign to do with the rainy weather we had this week (they do not like going out in the rain) but I dont think it can all be attributed to it.

Please note that they do walk 3 miles every day with me, so it is not like I am not excercising them.

I need some advice.

I think the rain does have quite a lot to do with it. They don't like going out, so are you sure they're getting as much exercise as normal? Sometimes a 3 mile walk isn't as good as a 20 minute hard romp in the backyard. I've noticed that when it rains here, I let my dog out less than usual, even though I don't notice it at the time. It's only when he starts "talking" at me, which is something he does when he's extrememly bored, that I realize. :)

How old are they and what breeds?

Crate them when you are not watching them. That will stop all the issues. I find mine hate going out in the rain, and I find a 10 min training session (tricks etc-it doesn't matter what I am training, only that they are engaging their brains) is better than a 20 min hard romp.
Good luck. (i dunno..I would have a hard time choosing between Dekka and Mark :D , but he would never dog that to me.)

We have a 1 y/o female (Brinley) and 1.5 y/o male (Butch). Both are a pug/beagle mix. We have had Brinley for a little over a year and Butch for about 4 months (although it seems like we have always had them both together).

As far as the crate goes, they absolutely HATE their crate and it never gets used anymore because they hate it so much. When we are not home, I usually just keep them gated in the kitchen and family room so they have space to play but have no carpet to ruin.

You just don't know what a dog will do. I would try using treats and kongs for try to get them to like the crate. If my dogs get into something they are not supposed to, it isusually my fault for not watching them c losely enough. Last night while I was on Chaz, Baby ate a pencil, knocked over the trash, and peed in the hall. I should have taken her out, and watched her better. M aybe when the rain is over, they will get back to normal.

It is important that dogs learn to, if not love their crate, at least be moderately happy in one. This is one reason why (and dogs shouldnt be crated together) Also if they ever have to spend time at the vet, or you have a crisis (family emergency etc) it is a lot less stressful if your dog can chill happily in a crate. Or if you end up having to travel long distance with them etc...

Mine all love their 'houses' They get all the best chewies, and treats, and meals in their houses.

So my grandmother at one point had 13 dogs, and she always had at least one (she lived in the country where lots of people would dump their animals, and they would find her.)

One day my grandfather was coming home from work with groceries. He was walking up the steps into the house and two of the dogs jumped on him, he dropped the groceries and the eggs cracked and went everywhere and just made a mess. He turned to my grandmother and said "That's it Olga! Either these dogs go or I go!" And my grandmother said "Don't be silly Kenneth, your suitcase is in the front hall closet."

1) Start over with crate training. Look it up online and find a nice, gradual conditioning type of approach.

2) Constant supervision when not in the crate....requires a lot of diligence and self discipline.

3) Take them out more frequently to go potty....more often than you can imagine that they need to go. (see potty training sticky)

4) Good hard exercise rain or shine. Put a raincoat on, don't make a fuss over your dogs and agree with them that rain is awful.... and just go have fun.

5) Obedience practice every day....several short sessions with them seperately.

You can get them back on track. Don't let them have another accident in the house. That just perpetuates more accidents. Clean up with Nature's Miracle and don't take your eyes off of them.
