Well, sadly, we had to put our oldest dog, Ginger, to sleep two weeks ago...she was 16, and had cancer of the spleen. Our other two dogs are Melvin (6 1/2 year-old golden retriever), and Puppy (4 year-old lab/chow/rott mix), we also have 3 dog-friendly cats. We have done our homework, and have decided on a basset hound in the future. The breeder we have investigated will be expecting her next litter to be due in March or April, and the pups will be ready in May or June. We are getting a female.

Anyway, I feel the need to post the obligatory, "help me with a name" thread, although we are looking for something that would specifically fit the basset breed. In other words, we want a female name that will sound kind of dorky, klutzy, silly, and enduring...I can envision almost an "older lady" type name for a basset. We won't name our dogs anything too huggy-kissy (like "Cuddles", "Cupcake", or "Smoochey"), so those types of names are definitely out the window.

Some names I've been tossing around are:
-Lola (I like this, but it tends to be over-used...if she looks like a "Lola", this is a possibility)
-Petunia (like this too)
-Petula (you know, like Petula Clark)
-Margie
-Francine
-Maybelline (her momma's name is "Maybelle"...so it kind of works, doesn't it?)
-Dorothy
-Dolores
-Henrietta
-Maxine
-Olga (I kind of like this!!!)
-Bernice (like this one too...)
-Gerti or Gertrude
-Verlene

I think you get the idea...

Right now, I'm leaning a bit toward Lola, Petunia, Maybelline, or Olga. Any ideas?

What about Madeline?

out of your list, I really like Dorothy and Henrietta. For some reason, Henrietta sounds so fitting for a basset hound.

Great job on doing your research ahead of time!!

Thanks! We're excited that we're choosing a basset...she'll be a good breed for our family, and our breeder has been accommodating, and very open to our needs. Maybelle (the dam) is a lovely champion tri-color, and Fudd is the gorgeous mahogany and white sire. They've been bred together once before, and produced wonderful and healthy puppies...we're very thrilled. Planning for a puppy is much like planning for a human infant...so this name stuff is important! :p We're also in the process of buying a new crate, some fresh toys (Lord knows Puppy and Melvin won't share theirs!), investigating puppy food, puppy classes, etc.

Yeah, I like Henrietta too. I actually am leaning a bit toward Olga right now. But, the name thing for me seems to be a very flexible thing...my favorites change on a daily basis!

I like Olga too .... not a cute puppy name but a good adult name for a Bassett.

Oh, I'm liking Freda, Marta, Lydia, and Beatrice too!

Tallulah is great...a very good Tori Amos song (who I WORSHIP!!!).

Hmmm...more great names. This doesn't seem to be getting easier! :p

Remember an old cartoon about a bassett hound(or was it a beagle?) that was kind of lethargic and slow but he always caught the bad guy(the wolf).

His name was Droopy.

I love that name.
