Luna just ate a bunch of onion and of course now I'm freaking out.

She's 7 pounds and ate the amount of onions they put on a Dairy Queen burger. :) I don't know how much onion that is, but I didn't eat any of them and it seemed like a moderate amount for a 1/4 pound burger.

Of course the info on the web isn't very good regarding how much onion is too much - "depends on the individual dog's sensitivity," yada yada - so I'm hoping chazzers will help me out here! Should I worry? Is there anything I should do?

Of course these things always happen on Friday night, when 1.) nobody's on chaz, and 2.) vets are closed for 2 more days.

My understanding is that its only a real issue for dogs who have underlying conditions and deals with anemia. Watch her closely and see how she is. (if its been to long to make her vomit) I would take her to an evet if she seems lethargic or uncomfortable.

My guys have snagged onion before, and my vet said its normally not a big deal unless your dog has (condition I cant' remember the name), but if they do its really serious.

She has no problems with anemia or anything.

I ran out of peroxide. :( Guess I'll just wait and see.... though I'm open to more suggestions!

If you've got any activated charcoal it wouldn't hurt. It should be okay. Anemia is the issue with onions, as someone else noted, and although members of the allium family aren't the best items for dogs to eat it's not critical to a dog in good health.

Cats are another matter.

Rosey has always eaten onions. She loves them. I have never had an issue. As long as there is no underlying problems, I would not be too worried.

Dogs used to eat onions all the time (when they were fed from their owners tables) and in fact until recently garlic was recommended, now it is an avoid food. I cook for my dogs and don't give them onion anymore but they got onions for years and are healthy and happy.
