Hi,

My 9 month old female pup has been in her first heat. She is not fixed, we were waiting until after her first heat. She bled for one mth, and it has stopped but her nipples and vulva are still very swollen, and just today she has started to hump my 1.9 month old neutuered male!

I screamed NO! And removed her, but she kept going back to try. So we kept removing her.

So I want to get her fixed asap. My questions are:

-Do you think the humping will stop if I dont get her fixed asap?
-Is the humping just related to the first heat or do you think it will become a habit?
-How long now should I wait to fix her since her bleeding just stopped last week?
-If her bleeding stopped, why is the humping starting now and why are her private parts still swollen?
-Do you think once I get her fixed she will still try to hump?

Any advice you could give would be most appreciated. I am calling the vet tomorrow, but am very worried about her starting bad habits. I thought I did the right thing about waiting to fix her, now i regret it. I dont want her to be a humper!

Thanks!

You should wait for 3-4 months after her heat to get her spayed, I believe. The humping could be a dominance thing and she now wants to dominant your male. She may or may not still try humping. The sheltie we had was fixed as a puppy and he still tried to hump the other dogs all the time.

As far as a heat cycle on a female is concerned:

1) Lasts 3 weeks
2) Vuvla will go down a week or two after the cycle
3) Enlarged nipples normal
4) Humping normal as her hormones are all over the place.

Continue to correct the behavior and get her fixed in a month from this date.

Dotto what Muggsies16 said, but to add that sometimes heat lasts up to four or five (every bitch is different).

And yes, humping is completely normal in a hormonal bitch and is not a dominance thing when it is related to heat cycles.

Thank you all. I will make an appt in about a mth from now. My vet says one month after the heat is fine. I hope he is right. You hear such conflicting opinions and it drives me crazy.

I will keep her off of him, just so a habit doesnt start.

Thanks friends!

I've read 3 to 4 months after heat to let the hormones get back to normal . I'd wait to be on the safe side.

Well our yorkie girl was fixed shortly after we got her, so maybe when she was 3 months old. She humps all my boys (we have 3)... So the humping may not stop, hers never has. She will even hump a leg (human) if given the chance. I heard it was a dominance thing, personally, I think just likes the feel...LOL

Sugar, my avatar, did that to Hershey, she was fixed, and everything, and they did it back and forth, I don't know what the reason was, but maybe this will help you. :) but good luck in figuring it out!

Just remember that humping is a dominance ... unless it involves a female in heat . I've had females humping males .. females humping females .. males with males etc etc . It's normal .

If your girl bled for one month......that is a VERY long time. But after the bleeding stops is when the "conception" usually takes place. As she would accept a male....and since she isn't getting one....the humping is a natural effect. Be very careful with her....she is probably "ready" and "willing". Her private area is still swollen naturally because her heat cycle is NOT over when she stops bleeding. It will take a couple more weeks for the whole thing to be over.....then you will notice a reduction in the vulva area. Although it probably will never get "as" small as it was before the first heat.
Good Luck and keep a good watch on her.

Oh Well... I see this thread is almost a month old...so I guess it is all over by now. LOL I will leave my post though. I hope everything is okay now???
