First, start this way:

Next, this puppy should have no time unsupervised with your children. Period. Unsupervised puppies learn bad behaviors that you end up having to undo later.

Have supervised play time each day, teaching the PUPPY how to play with the kids, and vice versa.

Arrange now for puppy training class. Your puppy should start NO LATER than 16 weeks, and sooner is better. Look for a positive motivational class. Stay away from the collar yankers.

And last but not least, READ. Read read read read. There is an unbelievable amount of info on the net.

Get to know your friendly search engine.

Search Puppy Training, Bite Inhibition, House Training, etc etc.

Read the stickies in this training section, and keep asking questions.

You are going to be one busy person with 3 kids, a newborn, and a new Lab pup.

Also, do please remember. Puppies are not naughty. They are just puppies behaving like puppies.

It is up to us to teach the puppy how to behave in order to fit in to our human world. What a task for them to learn.

Keep in mind how monumental it must be for a different species to learn our ways, and how fast they DO learn!

Choose the kindest ways to train, and always be patient.

I agree with Red! :)

As for ankle-biting, a method that has worked for me is, have the kids "yelp" and freeze in their tracks when he does this - completely ignoring him. He needs to learn that nipping is not "fun" for you.

I haven't had this problem with Tinkerbell, but old dog scrappy used to love chasing and nipping,ds1 had so many holes in his clothes... the way we taught her to stop was baiting a trap.... tied a long thin rope, like 20 or more feet to collar, and then had ds take off running across the yard, scrap would follow, I'd let her get out of what she *thought* was my range to stop her, then firmly stop with a loud "NO!" - it didn't take too many sessions like this for her to realize if she ran and nipped, she'd get stopped short, and that's no fun... it also made her think,I'm sure, that some great magic stopped her short when i said no... but it worked!:D
