Know can I cut my dogs nail. He will not let me touch his feet. When I have the dog clippers. He will fight till he wins. I had my mom and my step dad to help, and me cutting his nail, and he fought so hard. He started bitting my mom and step dad. Can anyone help.

You need to start desensitizing him to the whole process. Get him used to having his feet touched. Just pick them up for a second or two at a time and tell him "Good boy!" then treat. Gradually increase the time you hold his paws, but make sure you do this at least 5 times a day. Then show him the clippers. Don't do anything with them, just let him smell them. Then give him a treat everytime he voluntarily touches the clippers. Try and make him think that clippers=treat. Start off by trimming one nail at a time, give him a treat and then walk away for a bit. The repeat the process. It may take you a couple hours or even a day to get all his nails trimmed, but you have to make him realize there is nothing bad about it.

I would bypass the clippers and use a nail grinder. My dogs fall asleep when I grind their nails. It's so much easier than the fight we used to go through with the clippers!

It may take a while for your pup to get used to the noise of the dremmel also. So start out slow so you don't startle him with the noise or feel of the grinding of his nails.

my dog also hates his nails being cut, which just all of the sudden started happening because he used to be perfect for it. he is progressively getting worse, and really doesnt like the dremmel either. i brought him into work a couple days ago to cut his nails and a bath, and it was the worst incedent yet. we ended up having to just pick him up off the floor, and hes a 50 some pound dog, and just let his feet hang down and then he stopped fighting.
so you might just want to try and just have someone pick him up? still work with his feet everyday, i do that too, but as soon as he sees the clippers he flips out.
sometimes it makes me feel silly because i work in a grooming salon and my dog flips out worse than some of my clients!

dremmel tool

I was just asking in a previous thread about the dremmel tool. And looking at this one I think my question was answered. I've heard that they work great and you can't cut the quick whick I was very concern about. I'm scare to use the regular clippers since my husband once cut my female quick:mad: so I will try the dremmel. Thanks

I had a VERY hyper puppy (lab/malemute)before the dog I have now. He would do the same thing. After almost giving up I remembered hearing to sit on a disobidient dog, proving yourself to be the dominent one. So I tried that (not all my weight of coarse) and it worked purfectly.
Now I have a 11/2yr old GSD. Sitting on him doesn't do a thing. I got one foot done the other day by sitting on the floor with him and petting him to sleep. I started by petting his back and head. Then worked my way to his legs and feet as he was falling asleep. This made him very trusting and comfortable and trusting to sleep soundly. He didn't even know I cut his nails.
