But, knowing what we know today - as science and learning theory and the experience of countless people can confirm - that you could teach him all those same skills without ever having to poke/smack/spank/touch/stomp at/do whatever to him...would you still do it? If you knew (and I admit I don't understand how people can still argue this fact) that using praise, treats, toys and life rewards could give you a dog that still behaved as well as one who was trained physically, would you still choose to smack him on the bottom?
I ended up talking to this one guy about dogs at some non-dog event a while back. I was there with Bates, who this guy thought was a lab, and he was talking labs and training.
He said his pup is well trained now, that all he has to do is point and the dog lays down and cowers. He didn’t say cower but he did the motion with his head, neck and shoulders, of a dog cowering.
I looked at him for a good 10 seconds before responding, trying to figure out if he was having me on or not. Finally I asked him, “so you’re proud that your dog cowers when you point at him?†He replied “damn right I am. That’s exactly what he should do.â€
Meanwhile there I am with a “lab†who is showing excellent obedience, all sorts of different behaviors, no treats in sight, just a dog wanting to work with his handler, and all this guy wants to see is a dog drop in fear when he points at him.
There ya go....
