As many of you mave have read in previous posts, I have a pair of roommates, a man and his wife (who happens to be a dwarf/midget), whom I've been having some troubles with, mostly in not paying me rent for 3.5 months and not being able to follow simple instructions like letting my dog outside to relieve himself and return him to his crate.

Anyways, last Sunday I woke up at about 5:45am to go to work and when I went upstairs to take a shower I noticed that they had about 95% of their possesions packed up in the living room. Obviously they were planning on evacuating and trying to do it quite sneakily behind my back, or at least I'm assuming that since it was so early and they had obviously been packing all night and trying to get out before I woke up.
After I took a shower and got dressed, I went up and asked Jennifer if they were moving out and she said "You'll have to talk to David about that" with a little grin on her face.
So I marched upstairs to ask him why he was moving. He looked at me and started talking in a really pissed off voice about how he won't tolerate me threatening and bullying his wife! I thought, WTF?!
Apparently, earlier that week (actually the same day they gave the puppy a lot of water and locked him in my room), I had somehow "threatened" or "bullied" his wife while he went away for an hour to some interview.

I was appalled! I know I had never done anything that could even be percieved as "threatening"...even to a really sensitive person. I asked him what I did that was threatening. First he said that my puppy pushed her down the stairs (which I kinda doubt, since we have very thin floorboards I can hear him running and playing with keys--I'm sure I would've heard someone, even a small person, falling down some stairs... plus he's only 20-25 lbs), then something about me letting him in their room. "That wasn't ME, though" I replied, "What did I do?" He told me to go down and talk to Jennifer about it, but she just waddled away and said something like "Go away, I don't want to talk to you".
Finally, as I was heading out the door I interrogated him further, but all he could think of was I kept knocking and asking where he was, even though he had been gone only an hour. At this point I started to remember what happened. I was playing with Pudges up on the first floor then I went down in my room to check my email or something. At a certain point I heard Pudges playing with some keys that were on an elastic band that they had left of the floor. I ran upstairs to make sure he didn't run off and lose them, but I couldn't find them anywhere, so I began to get a little worried. I thought perhaps Dave had come home and picked them up or something so I went upstairs and knocked on the door to ask if Dave was there or if she had seen the keys on the green elastic band. She said she got them since Pudges was playing with them so I was like "Good, I was a bit worried he had lost them" and then I left. I don't recall doing anything beyond that, but apparently, it was to the point that she didn't want her dear old hubbie to leave her alone with me anymore, so he missed his second interview of the company that really wanted to hire him. Ironically, I wasn't even home for the majority of the week after that, most of the time I was at my parent's house.

So aside from being a bit upset that they were accusing me of being a threat and trying to sneak out on me early in the morning, I guess this is not so much of a bad thing. I probably would've had to kick them out soon anyways, but now I'm just hoping I can get the money he owes me. When I was talking to him he agreed to pay me as my "per contract", which means he wasn't going to pay me the extra amount we verbally agreed on sincehe had another person in his room who was using extra utilities and such, but if that's the case, I can charge him late fees since "by contract" that's what I'm supposed to do. Originally I didn't because he was doing a fairly good job of keeping the kitchen clean, but again, that was a verbal agreement!

Most people think he was trying to sneak out because of the huge amount of money he owed me ($1300 at least, more if I include late fees) and that DOES seem like the logical reason, but then again, he isn't exactly a logical person. To me it seems like he was really mad at me for some reason. I'm beginning to think his wife was gettin annoyed with me and made up this story or something. If he really does believe it though, I can't believe he thinks I would do this after all I've done to help "accomodate" them.
Aside from letting him fall 3.5 months behind on rent (long after most people would have kicked his rear out on the street), I took them to Car rental places, I helped them transport Foutons home my Jimmy and I even offered to loan him $20 for gas when he was apparently down to $2 for the week.

Finally, in closing I would like that you guys just pray (or cross your fingers or whatever you prefer to do) that I can find someone to replace them (this is my primary concern), someone who is trustworthy and doesn't try to take advantage of me.
Obviously, I would like to get the money from him without any hassle to, but I'm almost certain I'm going to have to take him to small claims court. I figure I'll give him a week or two to contact me and give me some kind of payment schedule for his debt...hopefully this will all work out.

Thanks everyone. I was really ticked about him trying to sneak out on me w/o paying rent or at least letting me know about why he was leaving on top of accusing me of being the bad guy!!

Anyways, I'm on Roommates.com and Craigslist, does anyone know of another place I can go to look for roommates? Aside from the Classifieds?

P.s. I edited the post a bit and added/remove some stuff to make it more effective.

Good luck with finding a new roommate! I've been down that road before, it sucks.

Just remember, change your locks after these people leave (you can never be too careful, even if they gave teh keys back, they could have made copies).

For you next roommate, be VERY explict in your lease. NO VERBAL CONTRACTS. I would even include some sort of clause about an increase in the amount paid on utilities if they have someone stay with them for a long period of time (like if a boy/girlfriend starts practically living there too).

Spend sometime with them and your dog, make sure they all get along.

GOOD LUCK!

I have had my share of bad roomie experiences, and I only lived alone for a couple of years before I moved back to the farm!

I will admit to having sneakily moved out of an apartment but there were a lot of other factors involved. And we didn't leave her hanging, it was a lease by the month apartment and we couldn't get HER to move out so we moved out instead. :p She was still living there the last I checked!
