So the other day one of my mom's cats got sick. She didn't take it to the vet... she left it to die. So I had a talk with her about her money situation.

She is so **** attached to these animals that sit outside and never get attention that she's making up excuses... "They won't take Padfoot because of his eye problem." "They're too old." "He doesn't come when called." "I already paid to have them spayed/neutered." Stuff like that. Yet they sit outside, and she even forgets to feed them sometimes. She's insisting that if the animals got hurt she'd take them to the vet, yet I know it's a load of ****. She may still take Padfoot and Baby and some of the cats to a no kill shelter, and it'll hurt. But what she doesn't understand is that it needs to be done.

And yet she continues to get new animals. In the past month she has acquired two kittens WHILE my cat was nursing a litter, and a puppy. Her total is 2 outside dogs, an inside puppy, 4 outside cats plus a kitten that someone dumped in our yard, and an inside cat. Why doesn't she see the problem? I would LOVE to keep Padfoot, but what if he got bloat? What if he got something worse? Would she take him to the vet? No, she wouldn't! I don't know what to do with her, it's driving me nuts! Can anyone please, please help?

I agree with you, honestly. How can she be attached to dogs that she sometimes FORGETS to feed? That she rarely gives attention to?

A lot of people feel strongly attached to pets they rarely interract with. Hoarders come to mind - I've heard cases where people have literally dozens and dozens of pets, but they feel so attached to each one individually that they cannot get rid of any one of them. But do they give personal attention to each pet? VERY likely not.

Is there any way you can get a job and help out? I'll be honest, a black dog, like Padfoot, likely won't get adopted from a kill shelter. People overlook black animals. :(

A lot of people love animals, but don't know how to - or just flat out DON'T give them the proper care. I know it sounds nuts, but that's the way it goes times.

I wonder if the animal control could do anything about it..?

She isn't abusing/neglecting them by law, so they wouldn't do anything.

I can't get a job... and if we took them away they'd be in a no-kill shelter, I wouldn't let her take them to a kill shelter!

Yeah, don't know about any other shelters but our shelter [which is a kill] is getting waaay too many animals in. I just posted about it.. it's really heartbreaking. Hopefully they get placed in better hands. How come you can't get a job?

Oh. What do you want to do when you get a job? You should work at a kill shelter. It's entertaining.. but heartbreaking, as well. Very busy.. :/ You'll be numb at the end of the day :D But a good-work-for-working-up-muscle job, all together..
