I wasn't able to make it to the vet today:( Hopefully I will be able to go tomorrow. I feel so bad for him. After doing more research I wonder if it's mites? I hope it doesn't get to severe.

well glad i found some people that have the same issue with their pets, well not glad that you have the issue but glad we can relate,
ok i think i need to explain what the sores actually look like, unfortunately i sold my camera so i cannot take a picture but i am getting a new camera and will take new pics of the red scab spots, but just to explain what it looks like,
its red all around the sore and in the middle when it first starts to appear on his body, its white puss in the middle and red around it, different sizes from a size of a quarter to the size of a dime, nickel and even smaller. well the middle white yellowish puss starts to dry up and eventually it flakes off like a regular scab does on humans, and o ya the sores do smell a bit so my dog over all has this weird oder and i can guess tis form the sores :( the doctor told me this sort of thing will never go away from my dog once he gets it, and he cannot bite or lick the sores because their saliva makes it even worse. im really stuck with this issue and it has saddened me and my dog very much, as he has had the cone around his neck for 2 months now and sores all over his neck, back chest tail etc. so now i will be taking him to another doctor, a skin specialist so hope they can figure this out.

Hello all, Ok update on my dog, took him to another good vet, spent a good 450$ and looks like my dog is getting better, doc said steroids and cortezone should be the last step any vet should take to heal any issue, so they shaved my dog all the way, cleaned all the hot spots and fungus, treated him with anti itch meds, got him on fish oil, changed his diet just to make sure, changes his shampoo again for reassurance, and so far hes been doing great, no more biting tail and hot spots are going away, i guess the secret is to take your dog to a better vet, spend more and it will be worth it :)

I'm glad your dog is feeling better! I'm going through skin issues with my puppy right now. It's tough! It hurts my heart!

Keep us all posted on how your dog is doing! I'm keeping my fingers crossed she's totally fixed up!

ok so the new food the doc gave me is Venison Formula Limited Ingredient Diets from Royal Canin, although i know the rash and skin fungus was not from the food, i guess better to be safe. The meds he is on is fish oil 3V Caps HP, Cefa-Drops Cefadroxil, and Hydroxizine and o ya i changed his shampoo as well, so far he is doing great, doc had to shave him all the way to the skin to clean the infected areas and treat them so he looks like a poodle now with no hair lol
anyhoo my advice to any dog owner, specially ones that have sensitive skin like maltese do, make sure to check for fleas at all times, use advantix K9 for flea control and try to not take him to dog parks as much, and if you do spray him with the flea control spray to lower the risk of fleas.

I don't know about Advantix, but Advantage is water soluble and doesn't last between bathings. I have a maltese too, and he gets bathed weekly, so I needed something that would last longer. They say that Frontline is oil-based and gets absorbed and distributed by their oil glands, as long as you give it at least 3-4 days after bathing and wait 3-4 days before bathing again. I would talk to your vet about this and maybe switch. It could explain why after a bath, you ended up with sores again.

the doctor told me the best is advantix, and it only lasts for 2 weeks IF and only if you give your dog a bath once every 2 weeks, and i believe they are all pretty much the same, oil based, advantix is just so darn expensive :(
and i know its not food related because i tested different food lines and nothing helped, the doc told me its most likely from a flee bite so be careful malmo, stay away from dog parks :) harsh i know but better to be safe i say.

Please be willing to consider that your maltese may have developed a food allergy in addition to developing an allergy to fleas. We had also spent hundreds of dollars trying different kibble foods. My maltese developed both food and flea allergies and I now feed him a raw meat-only diet. His skin conditions have vastly improved, even when he does get flea bites. (We live in southern California. They're hard to avoid.) Please ask your vet about Frontline delivery (oil-based) vs. Advantix. Frontline lasts 4-6 weeks on Milo, even though he gets bathed every week.

Just be willing to consider everything at this point. Allergies are no fun, and there are a limited number of sources for most dogs. Food is pretty high up there. You might ask your vet if he can give you a referral to a dog allergist just to be sure. I know you want the best for your dog. Sometimes we have to be willing to think outside of our experience.

thank you for the advice, i actually have switched his food many times, and im still trying to find the best food for his body, i also live in southern california and fleas everywhere, one thing with my maltese, as you know maltese are spotted if you shave their hair you will see the body coloring, well i have noticed, the darker spots have gotten darker after this allergy attack, im not sure if you have had the same type of allergies but did your maltese dark spots turn really dark?

My experience is that the spots are pigment, like freckles. They naturally get darker when the dog is getting more sun. I didn't ever notice it had anything to do with allergies.

Wonder what he's allergic to. Good luck with the food.

Any allergies can change over time, I was deathly allergic to milk as a baby, and until I was around 10 years old, now, 27 years later, I can enjoy a milkshake, followed by an ice cream cone, followed by a sundae. Similarly, my sister was deathly allergic to bees, but she was stung a year ago and didn't have her kit readily available, and she survived. So as far as it being the food, time will change things, and maybe it's the food, maybe it's not.

My parents had a Newfie with skin problems, and they did all the steroid shots, nothing seemed to work, they finally took her to a vet that specialized in allergies, and found out that, of all things, the dog was allergic to grass. It meant major changes in the way the dog's life was led, but, ultimately the dog was itch free and happy, even though her "yard" ended up being the blacktopped driveway.

On the other hand, I had a friend with a GSD, and he was pulling all of his hair out, his vet gave him all the shots, and medications, and put him on the Science Diet allergy food. All told, it was costing him well over $100 a month to take care of his Shep, and the dog still wasn't doing all that great. I bugged him a little and he ended up going against the advice of his vet, and feeding Canidae instead of the really expensive Prescription Science diet. A few months later, his dog wasn't on any drugs at all, and was perfectly happy. I offered him that advice after talking to my vet at that time.

My advice is, if your dog's having problems, and you see your vet about those problems, and they don't improve, see another vet. If it was you having a problem, and your doctor couldn't fix it, you'd see a different doctor, wouldn't you? It's not that one vet is better than another, or one doctor is better than another. They all just have different insights. Your current vet might be the best person on earth to take your dog to if she breaks a leg, or has a belly ache, he may, however, not be the best one to deal with an allergy.

My wife and I have several dogs, and several horses. We also have two different dog vets, and two different equine vets. We got into that habit just for the sheer idea that if there's an emergency and we can't get ahold of our "normal" vet, we could still get ahold of another vet that knew our animals. All of our vets know that they're not the only one, so it eliminates the chance that one may feel "jealous." We make it clear that we're perfectly happy with the care each of them shows to our animals. We also make it clear, that for the well being of our animals, we like keeping our options open.

Doctors, be they human doctors, or vets, are still only humans, they're not all knowing, they're not gods, they make mistakes, they miss things, they have preconceived notions. Seeing a second one is not an insult to a vet you may love, and if they're truly a caring vet, which most are, they'll understand, but more importantly, if you see a different vet, and you do find the answers you're looking for, DON'T take it out on your current vet. Tell him or her what you found out, ask him or her for their assistance in treating it. Make them part of the solution, don't blame them for the problem, and it will make them a better vet, and most importantly, it will make your dog happier.

The best food you've tried is Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul. I'm still not convinced that it is a food allergy, especially since you haven't tried to pinpoint the exact ingredient. Your veterinarian is not an authority on nutrition.
