I took Chaz, my Alaskan Malamute, for a walk last evening. As we were walking by the house on the corner, I saw this Rottweiller trying to jump the fence. This dog attacked Chaz once before, so I was obviously apprehensive. The owner came out to bring him inside so I thought "no problem". Still to be safe I crossed to the other side of the street to get off his territory. Then, out of nowhere, this dog is charging across the street. He attacks Chaz and Chaz tries to run but, of course, I'm still hanging on to the leash. He chomps down on his back and starts shaking his head.
I did something that I have never done in my life and, that is, "I layed the boots to this dogs ribs". It took 3 or 4 kicks before it let go and he went to hide behind his owner. I also had a thought, at that time, that I have never had. I wanted to kill that dog.
Anyways, Chaz was checked out and he's OK, although sore. For the first time in 3 years he wasn't howling at me to take him for a walk this morning. We'll go tomorrow.
I was amazed at how quickly it happened and I had no idea what to do. My only instinct was to protect my dog. I figured that I had a better chance against a 100# dog than Chaz did.
So today, I found a report on Dog Attack Prevention. It's free, so I thought I'd share it with any Chazhounders who are interested. Click this link and you can download it http://www.dogdaypets.com/dogattack.html

I am so sorry this happened to y'all. :( You are very lucky that the dog did not turn on you and that Chaz didn't run off because then you wouldn't have been able to defend him like it turned out.

What did the owner of the Rot do while this was going on and afterwards?! I hope you don't have to be walking by there anymore until something is settled. The suggestions on that link are helpful and informative.

I thought of letting go of the leash, but as you say, if they ran down the street I wouldn't have been able to do anything.

The owner was there, but didn't do anything. I think she was scared, as well.
Unfortunately, we live on the same street and this dog is loose alot. I called animal control and filed a report. They're supposed to be going there today but I haven't heard anything.
I hated to call them as it's really not the dog but the owner's fault. What am I to do, I'm not going to stop taking him for walks.

I know how you feel about that. Often times the wrong party gets punished, in this case the dog that doesn't know any better instead of the irresonsible owner. But this could happen to other people and dogs also. You did the right thing and I hope it resolves itself in a positive way.

I was attacked by my neighbor's shar pei/lab mix a few weeks ago while walking another neighbor's westie. The dog ran aggressively across the street and when the dog I was walking freaked out, the pei mix went to attack her. I grabbed the pei's collar and pulled as hard as I could, not really caring whether I hurt the nasty thing or not. So I know what you mean, I've been attacked before. There are too many stupid owners out there.

It is so infuriating when owners dont keep track of their animals better. I feel bad for keeping Nalla on a chain during the day but she is s jumper and given the chance she jumps my 8 foot fence. She is a good dog, but given the right situation I couldnt say for certainity that she wouldnt attack, and that is not a chance I am willing to take. She is getting fixed the end of the month and with winter knocking on our back door she will be in the house.

ohh geez.. I'd defiantely be bringing the vet bills to that owners house and making her pay them!!

I was walking a friends Lab once and a dalmation came out of no where(the lab was a wimp) and the dally just lunged at the lab, I stood over the lab, made her sit which gave me a good area to protect her with, and I grabbed the Dallys scruff of the neck and picked it up a bit. That way it couldn't reach me or the lab. The dallys owner came out and kicked it(real nice eh.. no wonder its aggresive) a few times, while I was still holding it. (I was still holding it cause I was afraid if I let go she'd lunge again).. anyways then the owner finally brought it inside the house.. I was just thankful nothing happened to my friends lab! lol

If you're having to walk your dog in an area that you don't feel safe in, whether it's because of a large dog or a human, a cattle prod is handy. You can get some fairly mild ones. Never, ever use it on anything that's not large, though!

And no, we don't use them on our cows; that's a great way to get kicked, aside from being unnecessary, especially with the dogs, lol! Although I have considered one for Charley ;)

Yeah , I've thought of a few things to use like that. It's just the one dog. The rest of the dogs in the neighborhood bark when we go by, but when they meet they just sniff and get to know each.) Animal Control just called and they're heading over there now. As long as they keep the dog tied up, I can avoid going by the property.
I'm not sure what they are going to do with the dog, he's known to Animal Control so maybe this has happened before.

wow...I saw the title and I thought "what? Pog didn't attack Lucas!" lol :p Lucas is my Malamute and Pog is my roomates ROttie. hehe

Anyways, I'm sorry!! :( Definetly glad you called animal control! Where I lived before when I walked Lucas (my malamute) there was an aggressive rottie right down the street and I had no choice to walk by it at the time. Everytime I would walk by it would bang against the wooden fence and break a few planks almost every time! I was so scared he would get loose! So I walked in a park a bit further from my house, but it was worth it! That dog was very territorial!!!

Take care of Chaz and keep us updated!

I kinda have a dog, the owners don't feed her or pay attention to her, so she comes over everyday and we play with her and feed her. Freckles is her name, we named her... the ppl said she has no name. Well one day we were there about to pet her and then all of a sudden the pit bull down the street came running into my yard and i reacted just a second too late. I missed her when i kicked. She latched on to Freckles neck and just shook. Man my boyfriend and i punched and kicked, my mom got the shovel and we smacked her, then the **** owner came over and grabbed the shovel and hit Freckles instead of her dog. Man... well my boyfriend grabbed the collar and choked her while i punched her in the nose and finally she let go. Freckles ran in to the garage and my mom freaked out at the owner. That dog has attacked me and my cousin and other kids in the past. The owner told my mom call the pound it would to me a favor... i think my neighbor killed her in the end.. not the owners, my neighbor, because she killed her rabbits. The owners should be put away... its thier fault not the dogs fault.

did you call the cops? i'd really really urge you to do so. you can specify that you don't want them charged and just get it put on the record, so if something worse happens to somebody or their dog down the line, there's a history on file.

i'm glad you and your dog are both ok! stuff like that is seriously scary.

Guys... just want to mention this thread is from exactly one year ago (10/4/2005). That's probably why the link doesn't work! :)
