Hi everyone, I have a question about this thing that has been going on with my puppy. She is a Westie, she just turned one on August 4. Anyway, I noticed quite a few times when I used to pickher up after her naps that she would be wet on one of her legs, and sometimes her bed would be wet, but it wouldn't really smell like pee. She usually goes and pees in a corner of her playpen when she can't hold it in anymore, and - while that happens very rarely - I can smell it from far away. She is also NOT wet when she goes and she's awake. I couldn't smell anything when her leg was wet or when her bed was wet, so I could only think about it being water maybe. This has been going on for a few months (2-3), but I just didn't figure out that she was actually peeing - I just thought it was somehow water.
However, about 2 weeks ago I was holding her in my arms and she went to sleep - she slept for about 45 minutes. Well, when I got up, I was all wet - see, I couldn't feel it when I was holding her, because there was no temperature difference between me and her pee. After that, it seemed like she would pee in her sleep every night.
We went to the vet 3-4 days later, and he said that he couldn't find any signs of infections, so - while it could still be that - it could also be that she has some incontinence due to her being spayed - but she is way too young for that. He advised that I should give her some sort of hormone pills (don't have the name, I'm at work), and if it's the spayed thing, that should clear it up. If not, I should come back so they can take Xrays and see if it's an infection. She takes 1 pill a week, except for the first week when she took 3 pills. The vet said that I should see improvement within the first week or so.
She's been taking the pills for about 2 weeks now, and she's been good so far, until last night, when she peed in her sleep twice. Once she was right next to me, napping on a chair, and all of a sudden she jumped off the chair. I could see a puddle right where she had been napping, and she was - again - wet on the outside of her leg. Then, 2 hours later she peed in my bed while she was sleeping - this time I didn't find it until later, which made cleaning a little bit of a problem, but that's a different issue.
The lady at the daycare tells me that there's a vet that comes every Monday, and she did some acupuncture on another dog with the same problem, and it helped. Now she does it every 3-4 months, and it's improved immensely. However - acupuncture? I don't know...
So, my question is - does anyone know what it could be? I feel so bad for her, she is obviously not happy when this happens. When she's awake, she asks to go outside every time, there's no accidents in the house while she's awake. However, she is miserable when she wakes up in a puddle. What could it be?
Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Corina
