Well, Zeus is going to the vet. He's had problems with his ears ever since we got him. I clean them out thorougly twice a week, but they're always covered pretty liberally with nasty black wax. They don't look infected, but he scratches his ears and shakes his head. Not very frequently, but enough to make me take notice.

Could this be an allergy or something? Should I try changing his food before going to the vet, and see if that helps?

Go to the vet and have the ears checked. My Max gets yeast ear infections, especially when the weather is warmer and humid. I'd rather be safe than sorry if they're infected because it can cause damage if they get worse. Shaking and scratching the ears is definitely a sign of infection. My dog's ears usually also give off an odor.

Here in texas our poor dogs with floopy ears are prone to yeast infections because of the high humidity, they don't get a lot of air in the ear canal. I try to flop Roxie and Brutus ears over to get air in as much as possible, while they are sleeping. That could be the cause. But it also could be ear mites. Good luck, poor Zeus.

My poor baby! I just got back from the vet, and Zeus has an ear infection in both ears. The vet said it's just starting and not bad, and I'm glad I caught it early. Zeus is on antibiotic eardrops now. The vet said Zeus has very deep ear canals, and that's what's causing the problem. I need to fill them with ear cleaner at least twice a week. I've cleaned his ears with cotton balls and wipes, but never with the liquid stuff. Anybody have a favorite type they use?

I use one from the vet. I believe it is called vet. Spray it in the ears once a week, rub the ear and wipe out with cotton wipes. Then they all shake their heads. It seems to work ok. Poor Zeus, I hope he gets better.
