I got my border collie mix on sat and she had one small meal- about 1 cup- of food on saturday night and about 3/4 cup of food on sunday night. You have to hand feed her and that doesn't even always work. She just won't eat. The only thing she eats are these soft dog treats that are really bad for her. She seems pretty active. She follows me wherever I go and will play fetch or go on walks. How do I make her eat. She is on pedigree which I know is bad but that is what she was on at the shelter. We are going to switch her over in a little while. She is about 9 months old they say and the recommended serving is about 4 cups a day.

Someone recently posted about their dog not eating out of a bowl. My puppy does the same--have you tried pouring the food out onto the floor?

Some dogs are naturally picky--mine is. We add hot water, olive oil, and flax to his food and that usually does the trick. This morning, for example, it didn't. We leave the food out for a while, then we pick it up and he goes hungry until his next meal time. A 9 month old dog isn't going to starve itself to death so if I were you, I would just present the food at set times until she gets the point and decides to eat.

Also, a lot of people have been posting with this problem recently. I agree with others that it may be due to the summer heat.

The first thing I would do is have a vet checkup.

If nothing is wrong, stop coddling her.

No more treats.

No more hand feeding.

Put the food in a bowl at the given feeding time, and present it to her. Remove what is left until the next meal time, and keep on the schedule.

If finicky eating is not due to a health issue, it is usually a learned behavior. Dogs also eat less during hot weather.

Well she finally ate. I guess it was because she was on crap. I mixed the Pedigree with Innova Evo and she ate.

If she does not like the Pedigree anyway, why not just switch over to the Evo now?
Give her canned pumpkin for a few days as well, to cut down on stomach problems.
Good Luck

I would but my mom would get mad if I wasted a bag of food even if I gave it to the shelter.

I'd just start feeding the Innova. The sudden change in the quality of kibble will probably cause the runs, so add in the canned pumpkin. (Unspiced kind!) 4 cups a day is too much for a BC mix. Right now one of my BC mixes is only eating 1 cup a day.
Second, I echo Red's advice. If she wont eat for a day or two cause she's picky, its not going to do her any harm. As long as they have water, they'll survive. Hand feeding and babying her will only make it worse.
