What sort of dog, and how skinny are we talking here? Does she just look really thin because you are used to seeing her plump for the last few weeks?

Here is a recipe for Satin Balls..........

1 lb cheap hamburger (for high fat %)
1 and 1/3 cups Total cereal
1 and 1/2 cups uncooked oatmeal
1 raw egg
6 Tablespoons wheat germ
1 package Knox unflavored gelatin
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
2 Tablespoons unsulphered molasses
Pinch of salt

Never seen a dog yet that will turn them down, and they are pretty high in calories to add some quick weight.

How long ago did she whelp? What are you feeding her now and how much?
She needs a very high quality dog food (kibble), free choice if she is thin or losing weight. Also you can add cooked rice and hamburger to her diet.
She should be eating nothing less than several meals a day.
Talk to your vet and you also need to deworm the pups, we deworm them for the first time at 10 days to two wks old.

If she has just whelped you also need to be very careful eclampsia, which can kill you girl. Again talk to your vet.

If you can see her ribs when she is not moving, or see her spine or hips, she's too skinny. Otherwise she's probably fine, maybe a little underweight.

Feed her a high quality puppy chow, and supplement with eggs, meat, etc. A high quality food is NOT Science Diet, Purina, Beneful, Iams, etc - basically anything you have ever seen a commercial for is crappy food, it means that the cash they should spend on ingredients is spent on advertising, and they add peanut hulls, wheat, corn, or unidentified animal parts to the food, all of which are cheap and unhealthy ingredients that will not provide the nutrition your bitch needs right now.

If you have a Petco, get some Nutro, Blue Buffalo, Wellness, or Solid Gold. Those are all pretty good brands, although the solid gold is probably the best. If you have a feed store near you or a small pet supply store, try to get Innova/California Natural/Orijen/Taste of the Wild or something like that, all of those are higher quality brands.

Yes, I can see her ribs when shes not moving. She whelped this afternoon (Saturday) at about 1. SO, I know I can't deworm the pups for a few weeks. Somebody I know said that she could have tapeworm, so I'll treat her for that and see what happens. And I'll try that recipe, and see if that helps. Any more suggestions? Thanks!

Okay, she's definitely too skinny. Poor girl, whelping must have been hard on her. :(

Please heed my suggestions about brands of food.. if you get her a higher quality food, she wont have to eat massive amounts of kibble just to keep herself going. Also, right now you can add eggs/yogurt/rice/oatmeal/meat/etc (people have suggested many different things) to her food to fatten her up. I also like giving a banana a day when my dog decides to go on eating strikes - it keeps weight on him well.

Since she whelped today , obviously you'll get her and the pups to the vet ASAP . If she was wormed before breeding , chances are pups are worm free . As far as tape worms , I'm sure that you made sure that she was free of fleas before you bred her . What breed is she ??? Are the pups pue bred ??

nutrical is a high calorie supplement gel you can get at most petstores that will sock the vitimins and nutrients she needs to her. I swear by this to help dogs in a weakened state. She will need increased food during her nursing time as well. I added eggs, powdered milk, yogurt, even a little honey to Mary's food when she was nursing and whatever i did must have worked because she looked really good and had more then enough milk.

I don't mind saying what breed they are! LOL! She is pure Peekingese and the father is Shih-Tzu/Yorkie. I DO NOT think she has tapeworm, becuse her stools do not have little rice-looking-things in it. I would DEFINITLY go to the vet for treatment for that.

Does honey have good nutrients in it? I've never herd of putting that in her food. I was just giving her regular dog food before she got pregnant and while she was pregnant (I did not know for sure that she was pregnant until 6days before she whelped). Is it a good idea for me to put eggs, meat, yogurt, or honey in her food now that she is nursing. I know that changing her diet in any way while she is nursing can't be good for the pups. Any input?

Changing her diet for the better is not going to hurt anything, and if she's THAT thin, what she's eating obviously isn't working for her.

I'd recommend ricotta cheese over cottage cheese- better calcium/phospherus ratio.

Eggs, meat, and yogurt are all GREAT additives to her food..........the honey is fine, but I wouldn't do it in large amounts, maybe a spoon or two a day.

just a spoonful for Mary and she is 70 lb dog. I fed her three times a day when she was nursing as well. During pg your dog should have had a much higher quality diet then her normal kibble. Now while she is nursing your really going to have to provide her a good diet or she will lose her milk. Nutrical is just the best stuff, i have used it for weak puppies, to put weight on dogs that would not gain..ie VICTOR, and to help Mary with her big litter of little pigs. IT is easy, a gel, you just give a spoon ful or if the dog is weak you can run a bead on your finger and adhere it to the roof of their mouth where the saliva helps disolve it and it is easy to swallow. THat stuff works miracles.

Make sure you keep those puppies toenails clipped too so they don't scratch mama to shreds. ANd clip away any hair that is in the way of her teats.

No, changing her diet will be EXCELLENT for her! As Dogstar said, whatever she is eating now isn't working for her. Your priority right now is getting LOTS of calories in her - high quality calories - to not only keep her healthy, but to get her to gain some weight. Lactation takes a lot out of bitches.

Honey wont hurt anything. I like local honey, because it can help people and dogs with allergies, rather than the stuff from the store. Local always tastes better, too.

Coop, I'm glad you and Smkie mentioned the nutri-cal.. I didn't even think of that. I'm using it right now on one cat and three kittens, and it is working very well. One of the kittens is having a hellish time gaining weight because she's growing so fast, and I have a rather sick kitty atm who is underweight. I can't even tell you how much I love the stuff!
