My puppy is extremely friendly with other dogs and people. When I took him to a dog show last weekend he was the most friendliest puppy there. he even wanted to play with some dogs that were trying to bite him, he didnt care he just wanted to play. With people he is also very friendly. he loves kids and whenever he sees any he always wants to play, he loves it when kids try to chase him or catch him and he always ends up jumping around trying to get away from them.

anyway i was talking to a friend of mine who has a couple brazilian mastiffs and he told me that its not a good thing to have a very friendly dog. he actually kinda freaked me out and told me how if a dog is very friendly its a lot easier to steal him and how i should teach my dog not to be friend with strangers.

i am wondering if he is right? i mean my dog always wants to play with people no matter who they are and really if somehow my dog was left alone out in public (it would never happen but i am saying "if") a stranger could easily come and take him and my dog would be more then happy to go along. so is it a bad thing to have a very friendly dog? should i start training him not to play and be friendly with strangers?

Friendly isnt bad.EVER

Sure your dog can be stollen but that would never happen because he is NEVER unsuprovised unless he is inside your house.

Don't listen to your friend. He doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. Friendly dogs are wonderful things. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them. No, it does not mean that your dog will be stolen. I sadly know of many people who have had their guard dogs (two rottweilers and a doberman) stolen. And from what I understand, guardian breeds are actually more likely to be stolen, since the criminals who take them are usually into "macho" dogs.

I think you should be proud of having such an outgoing, social puppy. And besides, he's still just a puppy. Most puppies are extremely friendly. When he grows older, he made settle down and become a bit more aloof.

That is very true, I was going to say that too.

cool thats good to know because i really like the way my puppy is. my old dog was very anti social, aggressive and grumpy the whole time. he would try to bite everyone and my friends just hated and feared him.. and he was just a daschund. so i am really glad the way my puppy has turned out the exact opposite of my older dog and i wouldnt want him to change. i actually owe it all to the breeder who socialized him at a very young age.

Keep in mind, that doesn't mean you can stop socializing him now. Growing pups need lots of socialization with people as well as other dogs. If you stop socializing him now, he might change as he gets older and my not be such a stranger friendly puppy any more. It's good that your taking him out to meet other people and dogs.:)

having a puppy that is really friendly is great, your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. i wish poppy was a bit more friendly. she meets up with strangers everyday but still is a bit resurved with them. we rescued her when she was 1 so i think her old owners didn't socialize her enough. my dog wants to play with even the nastest dogs but im really glad about how friendly she is with dogs and i love watching her play!

when he was a puppy i used to take him to the park where he used to meet and play with other puppies. problem now is that the other puppies are still small and geo is huge compared to them so he is having a hard time finding dogs his size to play with. then when he does find another dog to play with they are usually not very active so my dog is like jumping around in circles back forth playing while the other dog just sits there watching him wondering if my dog is on speed or something lol

btw i saw pictures of Riot the other Tervuere in the forum, in the guys signature riot looks aggressive. my dog barely barks only when his toy is stuck under the couch and he never growls ever.

In puppies, being excessively friendly is GOOD! To me, it's a sign of a bold, inquisitive puppy. I would be far more concerned if my pup was too shy than if he was too friendly.

Socialize him like crazy, and encourage polite behavior. His tendencies to be aloof towards strangers might not develop until he's quite a bit older. My Border Collie, at almost 2 years of age, is just now beginning to act like a "big dog" and more easily distinguish strangers from friends, and friends from family and greet them accordingly.

My Tintin was so friendly as your puppy when he was a little puppy.

I remember once, every building in our block was gonna be painted anew, and my husband asked me to put the puppy into our room, and close the balcony door carefully before I went to work, or the painters might steal him from the balcony.

If your dog is too friendly, just keep an eye on him! And that's enough. And maybe he will change himself a bit when he grows up. You know, now,Tintin my dog is no more that way he was, though he is still more friendly than other dogs.

IMO, a friendly dog is good for the family, especially for the kids! I have a 2-year-old son, you know, sometimes the kids are naughty, and an unfriendly dog may be dangerous to them.

Once one of my relatives laughed at me and my dog: What a useless dog he is! He waves his tail to everybody!

And then I just told her: Come on! I don't need any guard, I just need a four-leged friend!
