The great dane I had just adopted from the Humane Society, Chloe, has Parvo!! :(
When we got her I knew many of the dogs had the Parvo virus and Kennel cough, but wa hopeing hse didn't get it. She seemed healthy when we got her, but she started to not eat and had dierreah!! I took her to the vet and they are keeping her there for a while. This just really sucks!! I was just getting her all settled, not completely but pretty much, and this happens. I hope she pulls through!! I heard most dogs do, so I am hopeful.
They also wanted me to keep an eye on Lucas. I haven't seen anything wrong with him yet and am hoping he doesn't get it. He is up to date on all his shots and has a healthy appetite right now.
I really hope she gets better and comes home soon.

if a kennel has those two specific illnesses..it is out of control..it would be like adopting a child from a family with small pox. did you catch it early? IS your dog home with you because he could be..you can run a subcontanious iv at home just as easily and that is what they do there. I think being with you makes a big difference in recovery..u must as well clean all areas that your pup lost any bowel or vomit and wash with bleach..it would be best if you bleached as much of the surfaces where your puppy stayed. How up to date are your other dogs shots?

My other dogs shots got updated about a two weeks before we got Chloe so I think he should be fine, I hope. I am gonna start to bleach as much as I can and maybe using those deep cleaning vacums for the carpets? Do you think that would be a good idea? All the toys I threw out and blanket, just in case. I would rather pay money for new toys and bed than have my dogs get it again.
The vet said I caught it fairly early, which is good. I didn't know about the home IV thing.....do you think that make a bigger risk of my other dog getting it?

sounds like a plan..my heart is with you..and my prayers
good timing on the shots..should be just fine..still it would remove what you could..you will have to vacuum eventually ..and the virus can live for 10 years in a spec of feces..nasty bad virus that needs to go straight to heck...so even if your dog is fine..you will be protecting for later as well. when i had my pups i gave them the shots before they where weaned and again as they were weaned and a booster 10 days later because as long as a puppy is nursing..the mother's milk will negate the shot..something about her anibodies against it.. that is what my vet told me..i had a parvo war on my hands. the dogs coming into that kennel are doomed and they know they are adopting out potentionally seriously ill dogs..they should quarantine..and clean.

Thank you very much. I have to get to cleaning and vacuming and stuff. Maybe staying busy will keep me from worrying myself to death.

I'm so sorry !!! Also make sure that any of your guests know this and if they have pets at home use bleach on their shoe soles when they get home. It's nasty stuff !! **** breeders that don't vaccinate !

Poor baby! You just follow Smkie's and bubbatd's advice. They've nursed dogs through it. We'll all be thinking about you and your 'little' Chloe ( ;) I'm one of the few who can think of a Dane as a little dog - I've got 'little' ones too - Filas).

ROFLMAO! Grammy, I don't think it's even occured to anyone that you would use an F word. :D

But no one would blame you for referring that way to breeders who don't vaccinate against Parvo . . .

Awww....I'm so sorry about Chloe. I also have a dog named Chloe. My Border Collie/Lab mix that I used to have, Abby had parvo. She pulled through it to, so don't give up hope. I'll keep your Chloe in my thoughts a prayers.

Thank you Smkie. About the shelter they are quarentining. They just sorta caught it a bit late. They would quarintine one dog and totally spray the kennel with bleach and try not to use that kennel. The thing was the strays that were coming in had parvo. The people didn't know and when they found out a few other dogs would have it. It is a big mess that they are trying to get under control. The only thing is the strays that have it spreading it around.

But thank you all for your thoughts. I got a call from the vet and they said Chloe was getting better, although slowly. She is gonna be at the vets for maybe two more days if everything keeps going good. Thank you all for your advice.
Well at leas Lucas was happy about all this. He got new toys and beds and crate and everything.

my four recovered completely..i have a video of two i wish i could show you. They were my boss's prize (lifetime work in careful breeding) pair. My boss was getting old and we had never even heard of parvo when a couple showed up to board a husky pup they had adopted from wayside waifs..we lost two litters of 8 pups each, the two from california, and almost pdq and blazer. the virus does run it's course quickly (and in the old days fatally) but now by catching it early!!!!!! and giving good fluids a otherwise healthy pup stands a good chance. It is a big vet bill..i am so sorry for both of you to have to start your relationship like this. Suppose to be a happy time!

I'm sorry to hear about how the Parvo virus killed all those pups Smkie. It's really sad when things like that happen. I just wish more people would vaccinate their dogs for these things. I wish people would be more responsible. For the sake of their dogs and for other peoples.
I wish our relationship didn't start like this either, but I guess it will just make it that much more stronger.

Again...if those who choose to breed their dogs or do not have their dogs fixed would realize the pain, cost, worry because of no immunization!!!
