Thanks for teling me that but the problem is Pom Pom's not vaccinated yet and I'm not sure if she's old enough yet, is she? :| As for the puppy food, should I get it at a puppy store then? How much times should I brush Pom Pom's teeth? And clean her ears? But thanks for the tips ^_^

Someone posted a really good list of dog foods in another thread.. http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56946 post #6

Basically if it says corn, soy or by product of anything run away!

I would feed raw bones regularly and brush teeth a few times a week. My guys don't ever get their ears cleaned, so I can't help you there. Find a good vet and ask them about the vaccinations. But if they are like vets here in North America don't ask them about food. Find yourself and pup a good puppy class.

Just jumping in the thread... If I were you, I would find a good vet and ask him about the needed shots and worming meds... If she is 8 weeks old she should already have her first round.

As far as waking up, it will get easier. Just think when you have to go, you have to go. She didn't ask to be kept inside, but we love them and this is just part of taking care of them. Only other answer is to paper/ pad train her, but I personally think dogs should eliminate outside.

Good luck to you!!

most toy breed puppies do best with their first set of shots at 6-8 weeks of age, so if shes not have any vacinations yet its time to go to your local vet and get her first round of shots! this is VERY important. when you go also take a sample of her poop, MANY puppies have intestinal worms that need VETS medicine to treat (the stuff you find in the store is nto good enough) your vet will also give her a good look over, check her ears her knees her hearts and chest.
From this visit he will discuss a vacination schedual with you, some vets like to space the vacinations out more with toy breeds so it means more visits while others do them all the same. assuming he does them all the same your dog will need to go back in a few weeks for a 2nd set of vacinations then again a few weeks after that for a 3rd set. somewhere in there a Rabies vacination will be given too!
If her ears are VERY dirty it could be earmites which the vet will treat too!

in terms of care, poms have a very thick coat, shes going to need brushing REGULARLY! and her nails will need doing every 2 weeks too! get her used to her feet being handled and being brushed now to save you any future issues.
For teeth i reccomend a raw marrow bone once a week, you can go to your local grocery or butcher and pick up marrowbones for pennies usually! brush the teeth every other day with a DOGGY toothpaste, and small toothbrush, if you cant find a doggy toothbrush a babies toothbrush works too, DOGGY toothpaste is safe for her to swallow.

In terms of cleaning the ears get a cleaning solution made for dogs and a bag of cotton balls and about once a week dampen a cotton ball and just whipe out her ears to keep them clean.

1) Should Pom Pom wear a collar even if it's 8 weeks?
she should start wearing a collar now, start out putting it on for short periods and making it alot of fun, give her lots of priase. slowly build up the time. you will also want to get her used to a harness for walking, toy breeds should never be walked on a collar due to their very delicate treacheas! the collar should be for ID and rabies tags.

2) Why does Pom Pom stink so much? I know it's a dog and all but it had a bath like a few days ago...
her food is probably icky! unfortunatly that will make her smell from the inside out.
Nutro pet food, ZiwiPeak those are 2 brands i know are available in AU, just read the bag, the first ingredient should be MEAT, chicken, lamb, beef or even fish...and avoid any corn, corn biproduct or similar.
you might also want to give her a good bath using a PUPPY shampoo.

3) How long will it take for my puppy to stop peeing in the house? (With my training of course)
That all depends on you and your pupy. Toy breeds can be notrious for housebreaking problems! are you crate training? the more frequently you take your dog outside and praise her for doing the right thing and the less chances she has to have an accident (in which case YOU wernt watching close enough its YOUR fault dont yell at the puppy!) the quicker shell get the idea of where you want her to go!

4) When can it get vaccinated and micro-chipped? (Already wormed)
Most dogs need MULTIPLE dewormins...she can have her first set of shots NOW! and microchipping can be done during that first vets visit.

5) How do I make it stop barking each time it wakes up in the morning? (Wakes up at like 6 o' clock) dont reward her untill shes NOT barking, if she normally wakes up at 6am get up at 5:55am and take her out to go potty before she even has a chance to start barking and have an accident. if shes barking at 6am you need to be ready and waiting, as soon as she STOPS barking (even if just for a second) go get her and give her lots of praise.
Shell soon learn that when shes quiet she gets rewarded but when she barks shes ignored. right now shes a little puppy with a tiny bladder, its going to take her some time to learn how to hold it, but with time and patients shell be able to hold it a little longer. and because of that might sleep in a little later for you. untill then...sorry it means early mornings!

6) When I have trained it, how will it pee outside in the morning since the door will be locked (cos incase of robbery) wakes up at six and none of my family memebers wake up that early so..
Your going to have to start getting up that early to let her out...nothing says you cant go back to bed afterwards for a little while, but thats the joys of owning a dog...when it needs to go, it needs to go!
2 possible options if your not willing to do that would be weewee pad training or if you have a SECURLY fenced yard, a doggy door might be a good option, but remember, you live in an areas with LOTS of predators both land and sky and an 8week old pom is no bigger than a bunny!

Thank you for spending your time to write all that :D But now we changed her bed place, her bed's now outside right next to the living room, and there are like cushions and blankets and yeah, highly doubt that she would be cold. And she started crying for no reason once so I listened to you and ignored her, the next day I got a letter from one of my neighbours to not let the puppy cry so yeah, I'm confused :( I'm also wondering when puppies usually get fully potty trained by, like the latest at least. And does anyone know a good forum for training dogs to sit and lie down and stuff? If so please let me know as soon as possible. :)

as has been said, the only way to teach your puppy not to cry for attention is to ignore it...after the letter i would go to your neighbour, explain the situation, tell them your trying to train her not to cry during the night and the only way to do that is to let her cry for the first few so she learns it doesnt get her the attention...
as for the potty training, as has been said, it depends on YOU and your training. ive had dogs potty trained withint a week and known other dogs who are NEVER potty trained, toy breeds can be notoriously hard to housebreak, this means for every 1 accident she has you have to start all the way back at step 1. the more consistent you are, the quicker shell get the idea...but unless EVERYONE in the family is on board to take her out every hour (so that when your not home someone else will) its not going to happen.
At her age she needs to go out after she wakes (from sleep or naptime) after she eats, and after shes played real hard, you also need to take her out EVERY HOUR between those breaks, if she does nothing within 10mins come back inside and try again in 15mins-1/2 hour, if she goes potty, do the happy dance, lots of priase, and then repeat in 1 hour.

keep doing this for the next couple weeks at least, you dont want to change the schedual untill shes gone for a week with NO accidents...then expand the time between potty breaks, take her again after eveyr sleep, playtime and meal, but in the space between take her out every 2 hours...again, lots of priase when she goes, when she doesnt bring her back inside and try again in 15mins-1/2 hour.

Again continue untill theres been no accidents for a week before expanding the time again...

Most dogs can HOLD it safely for 8 hours by the time they are adults, but they have to train their muscles to do such a thing.

Some dogs are reliable within 2 weeks and can hold it for hours...others arnt and it can take, weeks, months or even years. it realy does depend on how much energy and effort you and your family are willing to put in!

Pom questions

let's start by saying relax take a deep breath and sit down you will be okay
1) the extra nail is not a big issue unless it bothers him or gets tangled in things i would ask your vet they can probably be removed when your puppy gets fixed.
2) puppies can have a smell because they roll in everything and may need a bath more then an adult dog
3) yes your puppy should alway were a collar at any age
4) how fast your puppy becomes potty trained depends on how hard you and your family work with him
5) once your puppy begins to mature he should be able to hold his urine and poppy for up to 10 hours not that it is a good thing to always make him hold it that long but he should do fine

what i woudl do is actually talk to any of your neerby neighbours in that case, take the houses that are closest to you and if you see them in passing just let them know whats going on.
Some people have never had a puppy and dont understand, others are just ignorant.

the key is be pleasent be polite and theyll thank you for it, getting the crying overwith now will save lots of issues later in life, if your dog gets used to sleeping in her own bed at night now as a puppy, she will be fine all through her life, but let her get used to crying and getting her own way now and when you cant be ther (ie a school trip overnight or something) shes going to make life even harder for everyone because she'll be so used to being with you all the time.

I personally cant stay away from home because my chis are not used to sleeping alone and they panic if im not there, luckily my sister is usually willing to sleep in my bed when i HAVE to be away from home so they dont freekout. i wish id taken the extra time to crate train them when they were younger...

if shes having a real hard tim in the crate you could try a blanket that youve slept with, a stuffed animal or something thats soft and ticks (ie put a ticking clock in a pillowcase with some stuffing, the ticking is similar to a beating heart) a blanket over the crate will keep it darker and might help her sleep (cover all but the front) and theres a pheramone spray called "comfort zone" that might be worth a shot if shes realy putting up a fuss, but honeslty the BEST way to stop the crying it to try to ignore it whenever possible. make her bed a happy place, whats her absolute favorite toy? my guys get a kong stuffed with peanut butter ONLY when i go out, its one of their absolute favorite things so while they are not happy about it they know they get something good and it keeps them busy...be keeping that favorite thing for ONLY when shes in her bed/crat itll help associate with good things, feed her in there too.
Shes less likely to cry during the night if she LIKES her bed.

are you crate training?

You should write a letter back to all of your neighbors explaining the situation, and also requesting that next time one of them has a concern or complaint to please address you directly. Maybe it doesn't bother you, but I hate it when people hide and complain. It's cowardly.

Thanks again FoxyWench but there are LOTS of houses close to me, there are the ones in my street and the other hundred houses that can see my house since my house is very viewable, so yeah.... And also now we have the complaint letter we opened a tiny little gap for the dog to squeeze through so no more barking, but she still does often when she's outside and no one else is with her (even though I am with her but just inside) And yeah I do have ALL her toys right next to her bed, her fave blankys and everything, I think that she likes her bed alot, but she likes being with people aswell so yeah... :yikes:
And Romy yes it does bother me alot when they hide and complain, when any of my family has a problem with the neighbour they would go to the house and talk with the owner directly about the situation.... So now what? Pom Pom just woke up from her nap because my dad was making too much noise while renovating the backyard. :(
P.S Does anyone know how to insert pics on here? You probably all know but can you please tell me? I wanna put some pcs for everyone to see of my cutee Pom Pom! :D I went to insert picture but you need a URL and that's the bit where I get confused.. (edited 3 times now)
