Yesterday afternoon, a lady came up our long driveway to tell my husband (who works out of our house) that an injured dog was at the end of our drive by the street. My husband went to see and discovered it was one of our golden retrievers, Charlie. We got Sam and Charlie from a rescue shelter almost a year ago, so we don't know their ages, but I think they are almost 1 year now. They are litter mates.

Anyway, the vet says Charlie has a broken jaw and his brain is swollen from the impact. They gave him IV's and pain meds last night and told me he has a 30% chance of survival and even then he may have brain damage!!

My husband and I truely love these two dogs and poor Sam keeps searching for his brother!! We are heart broken.

Charlie made it thru the night and the vet reported that he even moved his head when the technician checked on him this morning. That is a good sign, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high.

Have any of you had a pet with such serious injuries that has recovered OK??

I'm looking for encouragement or do I need to face reality that he is probably already gone??

Oh man... that's so hard! I just can't imagine. I can't really help... never been in that situation... but I think probably right now as long as the pain is kept under control it might be safe to wait and see how he does.

I'm so sorry! I've never had that happen but I would think it's a good sign that he made it through the night. I hope he comes out of it ok.

Oh my gosh, I'm SO very sorry this happened to your Charlie!

Many prayers and good wishes sent your way.

Anyway, the vet says Charlie has a broken jaw and his brain is swollen from the impact. They gave him IV's and pain meds last night and told me he has a 30% chance of survival and even then he may have brain damage!!
When I was a very young child one of my parents' mini schnauzers was hit by a car ... after my half-asleep brother let the dog out the wrong door and then forgot all about the dog and went back to bed.

Dog had a cracked jaw, broken pelvis, and water on the brain from the injuries. He was NOT expected to make it and if he did the vet said he would surely be brain damaged. He did eventually make a full recovery and there was NO brain damage. He was left with nothing more than a very slight limp from the healed broken pelvis, and lived a long healthy life afterward.

I will pray very hard for the same happy ending for your Charlie. Please keep us posted.

That's my only experience with a dog hit by a car, and never want to go through it again. So sorry you're going through it now. :(

Dogs are pretty tough you know. And yours is young. A friend of mine had a dog with a similar accident. She did not have enough money at the time for a vet. SO she took her dog home, kept him pain free, fed him really well and cared for him. Talked to him and kept visualizing him running and playing. Exactly the same way you would do it for a person. She carried him out 3 to 4 times a day (he was a colley) so he could relieved himselve. he was over 8 years old at the time. He recovered very well and lived another 7 years.

So we will send prayers over for your dog as well.

I am so sorry. Poor thing. My son's dog got hit last winter when he had her at his girl friend's... and it broke her pelvis and ruptured her bladder. That could have easily killed her. The pelvis healed up in a couple of weeks and no lasting problems. She had surgery for her bladder and it was touch and go until the incision healed. But no head injury. That's another story and very, very scary. Hopefully, the swelling will go down soon with no lasting damage. Will be thinking of you guys and sending my best vibes. So very sorry this happened.

It is sure possible he can survive...but I think you need to prepare yourself for either outcome. You are in my thoughts. Please let us know.

*good healing vibes and prayers being sent*

For me personally, I would not give up hope as long as there was any chance he could fully recover, even 30% is more than nothing and docs are wrong all. the. time.

You, hubby, Sam and Charlie will all be in my thoughts and prayers........please keep us updated when you know more.

Sending healing vibes to Charlie! You never know - a friend's vet diagnosed her 4 yr. old cat with cancer and said she only had about 6 months left... That cat lived to be 19-1/2...
