I need some advice, on something that I noticed about my 1 yr 5 mo. old beagle.
His butt smells like fish once in a while. But his pooping hasnt changed.
And no, I dont feed him fish, AT ALL. He eats ProPlan Chicken and Rice.

Has this happened to anyone else and their dog?

it's possible that he had just expressed his anal glands, pretty normal, so I wouldn't stress about that...my pups especially my golden boy will have that fishy smell also...if your really worried about it take him to the vet for a check up...

Agree.... anal gland discharge does smell fishy . They may need cleaning.

Hopefully your dog doesn't have a problem with his anal glands draining. I had a pug that had a problem with his anal glands draining and they'd fill up. The tell tale sign he was having a problem was when he's drag his butt across the floor. And he'd do a lot of licking around his butt and of course the nasty fish smell.

Every so often we would have to actually drain his anal glands and let me be the first to say that is beyond nasty!

I have a problem with my beagle's butt.

My Samantha did not feel well all day. She had diarrheah (sp?) all day. She went to the bathroom 9 times!!

Her energy level and appettite have been normal though.

No idea what's going on.

Any advice?

I didn't know dogs expressed their own anal glands??!!:yikes: Could a young pup say 4 months have a problem because mine is always fussing with his butt after he poops!! He doesn't drag though but he bites and licks - smelly too. (He is worm free by the way).

Does the vet take care of this business for you because I don't think I could do this!!
