ok i have a pomeranian and currently shes been shedding quit a bit. i cann pull out strands of hair from her. we feed her eagle pack holistic select so i dont think its the food.

ive tried a slicker brush and most of the times itll take out quit a bit of hair, but that doesnt seem to be enough.
i was thinking about buying the furminator but i have read and heard mixed reviews and opinions of it. my pom isnt one of those that are big and poofy. she has a really long and slick hair and body. so i dont think the furminator will work very well on her fur because the topcoat is so slick, i dont think itll pull out the undercoat.

will a certain shedding blade or rake work? those shedding blades dont look like the teeth are long enough to pull out a pom's undercoat.

I must stop the hair!

Sounds like your Pom is doing what we like to call "blowing out" her winter coat. Warm weather is here so bye bye winter coat!!

I get the same thing with my corgi. What I've seen work best is to take her outside and just brush her. I spent the last first day of spring outside brushing Ein. It took 3 hours before the fur stopped coming out in huge clumps. After that I bathed him with a Shedding Stop shampoo (availble at all pet stores). After that just keep brushing her daily to keep the shedding to a minium.

I've been told to stay away from the furminator because it actually cuts into the undercoat and can do more long term damage then good. Then again I've heard people sing its praises. Personally, I don't like it as it really stresses out my corgi who is normally great for grooming.

I use a comb to get the undercoat really well. Chloe, my Corgi has been "blowing" her coat recently. I gave her a bath on Saturday and have been brushing her almost daily. It's pretty under control now.

Where do you live crazydog? Is it just getting warm there, Spring? We call it "blowing coat" My dogs did it in the middle of winter because we had really warm weather for a couple weeks and they evidently thought it was Spring then. I am getting ready for it to happen again for it is Spring now! I just take them outside and brush them with a (I think it's a slicker brush). It has really tiny close together wire bristles. It really pulls out the undercoat. Good luck.

NC here. yeah i noticed she was losing quite a bit of her topcoat. it gets really annoying because ive been doing that "pinch test" where i just pinch her fur and see if much comes out. most of the time i can pull out nearly more than 10 strands. its not looking nice over here.

ill just keep working her with the slicker brush.
does anyone know if those undercoat rakes work? the spike things look too spread out to do anything and (well, for the pom, if that makes a diff) isnt my dog shedding her topcoat? and also the shedding blade. that doesnt look like itll do anything.. .any clue?

I like using a combination of a comb and a pin brush. I do like to use professional grooming shedding tools, like the kind you get from Oster. They work much better than the Furminator and don't seem to ruin the coat as much.

Re: your rake question. I use a slicker, pin brush and rake. Of them, Tosca actually LIKEs the rake through her coat, for what that's worth. Yes, in a coat such as hers it takes down a LOT of hair. But it doesn't take the place of a slicker. I don't know how your dog's coat is, but with Tosca I use both to ensure she doesn't mat, since most of her loose coat seems to stay right there when it blows.

I use a shedding rake, pin brush, then a teflon comb. I did this everyday until I was down to using just a comb. A bath and blowdry help loosen the fur.

Sometimes, the top coat doesn't get caught by the slicker brush, just the undercoat does. A comb will help grab loose top-coat, or....

I had a wire haired dog for a couple of years. She had to be hand stripped occassionally (meaning, I had to pull her coat out by hand). After my Terv girl had her first litter (and they REALLY loose coat after a litter) I noticed her top coat coming out, particularly when I pet her. So, I figured if I could hand strip one dog, I could do another. My Terv's coat was very loose when I "pinched" it, and she handled the hand pulling/stripping nicely.

If you want to try this, take only a small amount of hairs between two fingers and pull with a quick, sharp action. If it doesn't come out easily, it's not ready to come out, or not shedding in this way.
