The Labrador Retriever? :) Because of their gentle natures they make good pets when children or seniors are part of the household. IMO

Of course I'm biased since I have 2 and they love all children, adults, dogs and cats. :p

Boxers, through and through.

You don't know loyalty until you've had a Boxer. They're almost human, they talk, and are protective in a good way. They're menacing, but sweet natured.

I know my breeder (who has like 20 dogs) lent her key to the neighbour so that she could hang her laundry in the back pen. Helga forget to let her know that the dogs would be in the pen between the house and back pen. The neighbour spent 5 hours sitting on top of a washtub because they wouldn't let her leave! (no barking, no nipping, just standing there, and looking the part, all they wanted was some loving :p)

I know Marley groans and moans and does what I call "talking" and I've never known any other breed to do that. She'll make little noises instead of barking. Its so cute!

They're so patient, and great dogs for children. Ceara taught my brother how to walk by letting him grab onto the scruff of her neck, and taking steps (she'd follow him, and let him hold on to her)

I LOVE BOXERS (if you couldn't tell)

sure the labs are great, and retrievers are awesome (who can't love Shadow in the movie, the title escapes me right now, and i feel silly for it) but if you want Loyalty and a real pal, get a boxer SO much personality for the punch

I definitely agree that boxers are awesome family dogs. But I think the most popular would be goldens...they just kind of fit the image of the "typical American family", and I think a lot of people think that their family is "complete" when they have a golden for a pet.

Labs are probably up there too, but I see a lot more goldens than I do labs.

Beagles are probably at the top of the list behind the labs and goldens for families with children.

Tira talks all the time. She has since she was little. She can even say, what passes for, I love you and momma. Gunner is starting to talk as well. He usually does it when he really wants to go outside or is annoyed that I won't let him go the way he wants to go. It's the cutest little....rar rar aar...sound.

Btw, Labs are very loyal, loving and devoted. They'll bark if a stranger knocks or comes up the walkway but will lick them to death when they come in. :)

Yano Jen.. after knowing Hades up close and personal... I almost have to agree... Of course with proper socialization and obedience classes.

Hades is better than any family dog we've ever had. He's super quiet (he whines a bit for certain things), let's the kids tug him, hug him, cuddle him and if he's had enough, he'll come to me or brent and just look at us, like can you give me a break for a minute please!?

His mentality is just so sweet... so kind.. so loving. A lot of people will disagree, but if you met Hades you'd have to eat your words up! :D

Edit: I was kinda off topic.. I'm referring to pits as family pets, how good of a family pet they are... I could delete this but I love to brag about my boo boo and how sweet he is LMAO :D

Many dogs are loyal and a "real pal", INCLUDING labs and goldens.

there was an awful woman down the street from me that had 7 children. The parents were later arrested for abuse..but this story is about the boxer. That dog was the parent, the playmate, the road patrol..all wrapped up on one. He watched over those children like a collie does his flock. I saw him swerve and herd them away from the street and lick tears from faces. Later the horrible woman came to me and asked if i wanted to buy her boxer for 200. If i had any money i could have laid my hands on i would have done it and rehomed. The state had taken her children and she thought she would sell the dog to get them back (when heck freezes over i was thinking will she ever see them again) anyway, if that dog is any example of a boxer the breed would have to be in the top five of my list.

I'd say beagles are at the top of the list too. That's what my family has right now. They may not the the most obedient breed in the world, but they make up for it in sweetness!
