On May 23 I took Savannah to the vet because she had diarrhea for two days then on the third day there was blood in her stool and she began vomiting. She was diagnosed with severe colitis. She was given sub Q fluids, an antibiotic shot, flagyl and probiotics. She got over it just fine and once I changed her kibble all seemed to be well.

To explain our current situation a bit, two months ago I moved to a new city and am staying with my aunt until I'm able to find my own place. My aunt has 4 dogs of her own. They are free fed and in the beginning I was trying the same thing with Savannah to see if she could adjust to it to make everyone's lives easier. This is the food they eat/she was eating:

Professional Pet Foods | Products | Dogs | Dry Food | Professional Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula

I really think that the food probably had a lot if not everything to do with Savannah getting sick. When I was able to get her back on kibble I started her on Taste of the Wild Wetlands. I feed her twice a day and sprinkle probiotics on it once a day. Every other day I give her plain yogurt and I also give her 1/4 cup canned food (various high quality brands) with one meal per day. She was doing fine on this.

There have been a few times when she has snuck a bite or two of the other dogs' food but hasn't had any problems from it. On Tuesday I was caught in a storm and wasn't able to get home as early as usual and she pooped in her crate. Which of course was entirely my fault and I accept that. There was normal poop but also some loose stool. I took her out and she had watery diarrhea.

On Wednesday morning she had watery diarrhea again. I fasted her all of Wednesday and she seemed to be ok.

On Thursday morning she didn't poop but that afternoon she had a somewhat solid poop followed by some liquid poop. I gave her some boiled chicken and rice sprinkled with probiotics last night before bed. Just a few spoonfuls to see if she would keep it down.

Today is the same as yesterday somewhat solid poop followed by liquid. It's a reddish brown color. My question is should I continue to feed her small meals of the chicken and rice or does this mean she needs to be fasted more? Is there anything else I can do for her? I would really like to avoid another vet visit if possible. Also, do you think the stress of being crated longer than normal could have caused this? It's possible she got into the other dogs' food but I didn't see that happen.

Thanks in Advance,
Melissa

Could definitely be stress, especially if she's sensitive. Gavroche has diarrhea for 2 or 3 days after a vet visit lately. Logan does not do well on probiotics- they make him have worse diarrhea, or if he had solid poop they make him have diarrhea - and I've tried the one for people, fortiflora (ew unspecified animal digest...never again), and yougrt with all the same results. When he had diarrhea shortly after I got him it ended up being a clostridium infection (had to seff a pcr test) and we treated it with Tylan. He still had the occasional squishy poop until I changed him over to TOTW and it's been perfect ever since.

If it's a temporary living situation, I'd talk to your vet about keeping her on daily flagyl until you are in a situation to better manage what and when she eats.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to try taking her to a different vet this week. Is there anything in particular I should ask them to do? I was told the last vet should have done a fecal test and that was never done.

Thanks Again,
Melissa

A fecal float and direct smear at a bare minimum. If it's recurrent I'd also do a fecal PCR if you can swing it.
