So if a dog looks like a pitbull it is one? What is wrong with this province. This is just disgusting. I hope it doesnt pass. if it does there goes my future rotti, GSD and dobe.
Yes, that's exactly the problem with the legislation! A boxer/lab cross can be persecuted as a pitbull if the owner can't provide proof that the dog is NOT a pitbull. I don't even want to imagine how many dogs have been put down becuase of this. Let alone the dogs that are acutually pitbulls :( Just sucks.

There was a 16 week old seeming boxer cross pup in the peterborough humane society. A person from rescue went to 'claim' it. The humane society said, 'nope, its a pit bull pup' and euthed, a 16 week old pup. Its just sick, really sick.

They've done a lot of that. A customer had a boxer/lab puppy (saw both parents) that was taken from them when they took her in to be registered! They had to come in with proof of both parents before the humane society would give her back, and I'm still rather surprised they got her back. The peterborough humane society is just a LITTLE trigger happy over this whole thing.
Plus there was that whole issue with registrations this year. Any dog they suspected was affected by the legislation had to come in and have pictures taken of it with it's muzzle on so they could "better identify it in case of an attack".

I actually also wanted to encourage everyone to write letters to their liberal MP and Conservative MP and claiming you will not be supporting them for their participation and support for the original pitbull ban and the further addition of breeds listed in this thread. Phone calls are generally manned by volunteers where as letters are generally counted and used for statistics by the party as to what issues are concerning voters.

It would be great to get some media coverage as well as to why dog owners will not be supporting the liberals again. Anyone have any ideas on how to make this happen? Even assemble a protest march prehaps?

I'm just in the process of writing these three stations and would urge everyone else to do the same if you get a spare 10 miniutes

I am disusted, but not one bit surprised.

Just another piece of useful info....the Liberal gov't paid the Ontario Humane Society to take a different stance on BSL than what they had when the law was first proposed.

They were completely opposed to BSL and spoke out about it. Now they keep their mouths shut, steal peoples pets and kill innocent dogs.

Really? They're still adopting pit bulls, and most that they have for adoption have some form of behavioural issues. Infact when i was there this summer, they had a 7 month old ILLEGAL pit for adoption. (I definatley wondered how they were getting away with it!)

Compared to the HS here, and how shelters like ours are conducting themselves after the ban, the attitude of the THS strongly suggests they're still against the ban.

What many people do not realise is that fighting dogs including Pit Bulls have to be trained to not back down in a fight. Their natural instinct is trained out of them by harsh and cruel methods such as starving, taunting and beating the dog to make it vicious. Dog fighting is an illegal and cruel sport and has sadly given all Pit Bull type dogs a bad and undeserved reputation.

That is a good point. But here in Ont I don't think its cause of fighting that people think they are scary. There doesn't seem to be that sub culture here. Its more the fault of the media. Any dog bites a kid and its a pit bull

Dekka, you would be surprised! There are dog fighting rings in Toronto and Hamilton and Cambridge is huge for dog fighting. Not anything like one would find in Detroit or Chicago but deffinately isnt non-existant either. They are just small enough that they are easier to hide. Oh ya and regardless of BSL they are still fully operating to this day. Just goes to show who really gets effected by BSL...

K9Obedience, actually APBT do not need to be trained to not back down ;) The Terrier in them already makes that occur naturally just like with Patterdale Terriers and German Hunting Terriers when they are after quarry. Dog fighters will build up this drive even more though by boosting the pit's confidence. This happens by pitting them against bait dogs which are dogs they know the Pit can beat. If the bait dog starts winning for whatever reason though the dog fighter helps out (usually by breaking the legs of the bait dog) so the the Pit still wins in the end. They give the dogs gun powder and starve them thinking that this will make them meaner and tougher and "hungry for blood". How this though came to be I havent the foggiest because it simply does not work. The world of street dog fighting or "gangsta" dog fighting is a cruel and malicious one that is very different even from the "gentleman's" dog fighting that the Pit Bull one upon a time was used for. It is also very very different from the dog fighting that at times occurs in the old countries with LGDs to gain breeding rights. But I am going wayyyyy off topic here LOL

So does anybody know which Ontario parties are against BSL and which would just push it further?

When it came time to vote for or against Bill 132, the Liberals voted for the ban, the PC and NDP voted against the ban.

Strategically speaking, the only party that really has a chance against the Lib's is the PC. If we can get Michael Bryant out as AG I doubt that a PC or NDP AG would fight the court issue.

How sweet it would be to hear that the law had been repealed!

Has anyone heard when the next court date is? I know that Clayton Ruby will be appealing the last decision.

Was it an open vote? I thought all the liberals HAD to vote in favour of the ban (well... they *can* vote against the party, but it's political suicide). The whole thing is just... frustrating.

Clayton Ruby has done so much already. I'm upset the original appeal process wasn't more successful :(

^ People dont get it.They think any dogs in movies who are the "Good Guys"
are good. They think all animals that have been betrade as bad are bad.Its like calling all black people bad. They have done that with people and know they take it out on animals.

The Liberals were told that they could vote any way they wanted about any issue EXCEPT Bill132! Political suicide is right LOL.

Dalton McGuinty and his front man Michael Bryant promised the people that they would follow the experts advice on this issue. Another broken promise from a party with a history of the same.

For those into some heavy reading you can read the debates here...To make a long story short, all qualified experts advised the Liberal's against BSL.

My nerves are just wrecked waiting for this election! :yikes:

Well if they weren't told they had to vote with there party, this thing never would have passed. The liberals knew in order for this law to go through they had to have the whole party behind them.
At the very least we need to keep liberals to a minority... because at least that way they can't alter the bill or pass any amendments without other parties being on board... which we already know they are not.

Even though Ontario BSL does not affect me personally, I can tell you, that day will be one of the happiest days of my life.

It will set president and other communities and provinces won't be so quick to bring in BSL and the ones that do have it may be taking a second look at their ridiculous laws.
