I had been saving this little piece ever since I saw the video of Hiro dashing delightedly around... I was reminded of it when you first posted that he wasn't quite "right." I bookmarked it in case I ever needed to share it with you.
It is from Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soup. In this story, an elderly ACD was put to sleep in their home because he was dying of cancer. His family consisted of two adults and a four-year-old named Shane.
After the dog was gently laid to sleep, the vet began speculating with the adults as to why animal lives are shorter than human lives.
To quote:
"Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me - I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, "Everybody is born so they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.""
If ever an animal was born with such a good nature, loving attitude and obviously cheerful aura, it is definitely Hiro. May he rest in peace and keep all our pets that are waiting for us happily attacked by his puppy antics and play.
Thinking of you all....
