I was grooming Bentley last night and noticed that he has a quarter size patch of hair missing on the inside of his neck. I haven't seen him itching it and there were no scabs, so I'm not sure if it is something I should worry about.

The pups do play rough sometimes so I'm not sure if maybe one ripped the hair off. I just don't want to take him to the vet for no reason seeing as how the last two times I went in for things there was nothing wrong with him at all .I'm a hypochondriac!

Any ideas?

I am a hypochondriac too, and feel that it is better to be safe than sorry. I think I wold at least call the vet and describe what you see, and see what they say..

OMG krisy, I went through the same thing with Orson this weekend. I posted on my Dobe site because I was freaking over it a little................They all said if it isn't red, and they are not biting at it at all, then it probably isn't a medical emergency. They told me it could be anything, maybe even a bite from one flea if the dog is sensitive. His spot isn't red, itchy, or flaky....just bald.
This happened on friday morning, I called the Vet and they were out til today. I bought some hydro-cortisone for doggies just in case it was itchy.
This is what it looked like friday.

Now I can see the little stubble hairs starting to grow back in so I am going to postpone the Vet visit and see what happens.

You can probably watch him and see if it is bothering him, or if the spot is getting bigger/worse before you rush off to the Vet.

To alleviate fears of mange or a thyroid issue, take the dog in for a scraping. It doesn't need to be an emergency visit, but, it would be better to catch those problems as early as possible.

He's going in first thing in the morning. It's kind of rough now where the skin is exposed.. almost like it's scabbing over. I'm so upset! I keep him so clean and groom him daily, I feel terrible.

The vet said it was an abrasion and gave him an antibiotic shot, antibiotics to take at home, and a cream. He said the combo of those things should make sure it heals faster and doesn't become infected. Looks like it was just rough play and nothing serious, thank goodness. The fiancee isn't too thrilled that I spent 100 to find that out, but whatever I can breathe easier now.

so glad that it was something minor!
Thanks!! I was relieved too. I just feel so bad for him because it's all crusted and scabby... and I just wish I could make it heal instantly. I tried to cut the hair around the scab so that it won't get in there and irritate him... but he wasn't really having it.. I'm sure it's sore. Poor baby.

I am glad it was an easy fix, and nothing serious. :) Orson's little spot never showed any signs of scabbing or roughness.................it is already starting to fill back in with hair.
If not for my other forum (who has lots of dobe experts) I would have rushed him in at double the price on Saturday morning to rest at ease!!
You can't put a price on peace of mind!! :) :)
