Lady is producing milk. She's not pregnant. She had puppies 15 months ago, and was in heat in October. Should I worry?

It can be and the more heats she goes through, the higher her risk of developing uterine and/or mammary cancer. Or she could develop pyometra, which is life-threatening as well.

May I ask why you want to keep her intact?

It does sound like a falsie, especially if you're sure that no male got to her back in October.

The number one risk associated with false pregnancies is Pyometra...that being a pus filled uterus. This is a critical situation and bitches can die from pyo within a relatively short timeframe (think days)...and many times you will see few symptoms unless it is quite progressed.

Pyo can be open...meaning the uterus leaks the pus and it is present at the vulva...or closed when it is contained within the uterus.

Signs to watch for are high temp...over 102...lethargy...excessive thirst...just generally "off"...but again..sometimes one sees no signs.

There is a treatment for pyo but it's sucess is very limited and it is an expensive treatment. The preferred method...and the only method for a pyo that's progressed much, is an emergency spay.

The risk of pyo increases with age...peaking around 4-6 years old in many cases. If a bitch is not going to be bred...every cycle is a risk to her and she should be spayed.

Pyo is no joke...it is a scary, and totally prevenatable occurence.

Ok, I'll talk to the vet. We feel that the intact bitches are better hunters and trackers, but her health is my number one concern. Thanks for everyone's input!

New thread for new discussion

:) You're right Animal Lover, It doesn't affect her nose. It seems that most neutered and spayed dogs and bitches have less drive and instinct than their intact counterparts, although there are exceptions. This should probably be discussed on another forum, if anyone wants to; maybe "General Dog Chat"?

Question for Zoom

Could she really still be pregnant if a male dog got to her last October? I can't imagine that this happened, we keep really close tabs on our dogs, and their kennel where we put them when we leave the house without them has a roof; nothing bigger than a chihuahua could get in. I am asking this question because I have heard of "imacculate conceptions":(, and I suppose theoretically it could have happened in one of the rare 15 minute intervals when she was outdoors unsupervised.
