I saw a similar article this morning, and both my cats and my dog are chipped. Obviously, I'm concerned. On the other hand, there has been no outcry from vets about animals with tumors. And the size of one of those chips compared to a rat or mouse is radically different from even the size compared to a house cat. (I'm looking at my fiance's rats now . . . a grain of rice is a pretty big object to put under their skin). So it might just be the degree of irritation caused by the chip that is the problem.

Considering I'm not sure they can be removed, I'm just going to take a wait and see approach. Since your cat is not yet chipped, I'd probably wait on it . . . more information will be forthcoming, I'm sure. I would just put a sturdy collar and tags on (which you should do anyway, even if your cat is chipped) and keep the cat indoors (always a good idea).

*shrug* i'm not that concerned about it. all my dogs came chipped, and if they hadn't, i'd have chipped them, even with this information available. the risk is tiny. there are risks in everything. personally, imo, the average dog is at a much higher risk of getting lost than of developing a tumor from a microchip.

ymmv of course.

i wouldn't worry too much. i mean there are a TON of things that cause cancer in lab rats. but when you convert how much it would take to affect something lik 50 times its size it's not that big a threat

Yesterday the worried phone calls started to come in at work. People believe anything they read without studying the issue, I swear. I'm not concerned at all and am having Khuno and Mikoa chipped this month. Everyone else is already chipped and I've never had a problem.

One has been chipped since I've had her... no issues yet.
The other I plan to have chipped sometime.

I agree that the great risk of losing my pets far outweighs the miniscule risk of my pets developing a tumor. My pup is chipped and I'll be getting my senior chipped at her next appt. I've never worried about losing her because she doesn't leave my side ever BUT she is developing some symptoms of dementia and I'm not willing for her to wander no matter how slim the chances. Accidents happen.
