Hello,

Anyone have experience with the canine drug "Metacam" My vet has prescribed it for my toy poodle and was wondering if anyone here uses it and how its working out for you and your dog!

Thanks

I just started my 70lb GSD on it, so I can't give you any input on how it will work for a couple weeks! She'd been on etogesic for a long time but it just wasn't cutting it anymore. I also have her on salmon oil, flax oil, msm w/ glucosamine. She has really rotten knees (has had one surgery done), 11 yrs old and pretty darn stiff, tho she still races around like an idiot, then pays for it.

Friends of mine have their dogs on metacam and they say it works great.
It will be interesting to see how these two do on it

Thanks for the reply.

Do you buy your prescription online? My vet charged me a fortune for my small dose and I see that Foster & Smith will supply me with ten time the amount for just twice what I paid at the vet.

I decided to buy 10ml bottle from my vet, it was 17.99 to try it out first, That should last my 70lb dog 7 days, but yes, my vet will write me a prescription and I plan on getting it from Foster & Smith. I get my heartworm meds from them to, and shipping prescriptions is only 2.99.

My GSD has been on it for 4 days, and I AM seeing improvement. I know she won't ever be 'normal', but she is much more mobile and not as stiff looking.

How's your poodle doing?

Yeah I have been to two different Vets in two months and both times they charged double for medication. I see your in Connecticut, I'm from Norwalk Connecticut but I moved out to Arizona last April.

Metacam destroys the liver. I would only use it for EXTREME circumstances and then only for a short time frame for pain.

What ailment is your dog suffering from that requires Metacam. There are many natural anti-inflammatories that are great for problems such as Arthritis and other joint problems.

If you do decide to continue with Metacam be sure to give Milk Thistle to protect the liver.:)

Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease of the back left leg is what the Xray's show.

The Vet prescribed a low dosage of Metacam to be given when the dog seems to be in discomfort but not necessarily every day. Thing is this dog is not a vocalizer, never ever barks, and is very calm so I don't always know when he is in pain unless he starts to walk on three legs. Since I do not want him to be in pain I have been giving him his metacam for one week straight. I dont want the medicine to hurt him and I don't want him to be in pain.

In six weeks he gets another Xray to see if the disease has advanced or if its leveled out. He's adopted so we don't have prior data on the advancement rate. all we know is he is 4 years old this may.

Are you getting surgery done to remove the diseased bone?

For the secondary Arthritis I would go with a good Glucosamine supplement. Syn-Flex is a great one to use. For use as an anti-inflammatory, Syn-flex already has Yucca root in it. You can also give ginger and turmeric as a great anti-inflammatory. These are natural and help support the dogs system instead of masking symptoms and suppressing like Metacam does.:)

warriorant,,wow small world,,I am in Lyme CT.

calnorthdawg- I think most if not all of the nsaids come with liver/kidney warnings don't they? I do kidney/liver function testing every few months on this dog especially since she is on and has been on/ nsaids for quite a few years.

Milk thistle? I'll definately add that to her list of supplements, would I get that in a health food store? And how much would you suggest for a 70lb dog?
I also supplement her with msm/glucosamine and the synovi, she should have pretty lubricated joints, but unfortunately OCD has caught up with her, has had one surgery and I hate to have to put her thru another but I may have to. I know she's loaded with arthritis in the knees, poor girl.
Thanks

That's a shame. Poor dog, it's so sad to see our babies suffer.:(

I will certainly look up how much Milk Thistle to give. Most times it will tell you on the bottle. I prefer a tincture over capsules.:)
