Dog fighting is so wrong. I don't understand how two animals ripping away at each other can be entertaining. I hope these men face a lot of jail time.

I really wish the Feds would use their brains. There is always gambling associated with dog or cock fighting. The Feds need to step up and in conjunction with these people facing criminal charges from their respective states, they need to face Federal racketeering and tax evasion charges. That ups the stakes considerably and, with convictions, gives these sub-humans a nice long time-out in a Federal facility - not a place anyone wants to spend time if they can avoid it.

The thing about it is it's an easy out for the Feds. All they have to do is catch a couple and the rest will fall into their hands. And if they're slick and bust a fight in progress . . . not only do they get to bust a crowd, there's all that ill-gotten gambling money to be confiscated, not to mention the drugs that usually accompany any kind of 'dark' activity.

I'm going to shut up now before I get started . . .

Where I was vacationing in TN it was publically announced on all the news channels that animal abuse is officailly a felony. Is there anyone that lives in TN that can give us a little more info on that?

and I remember dog fighting having a pretty big following in the smaller towns all over the south.

Small town sheriffs are often paid off by the gambling profits.

It is a long time past time that has been passed down for generations in some parts.
But is so easy to stamp out today as they are hugely outnumbered and now the law has the bite to get them. They didn't even have to hide a century ago.

About six years ago, when my now ex-boyfriend had decided he wanted to be a professional wrestler, we were doing shows in small towns all over east Tennessee, North and South Carolina and Kentucky.

I'd booked us a show in a town in eastern Kentucky for one Saturday night. It was a long drive, of course, they always are, and as it was late fall it was well after dark when we got near the arena about a half hour before bell time. I started wondering when we drove over this little wooden bridge with no side rails that spanned a creek and came upon a large clearing with one entrance through a gate to an enclosed parking area. We drove inside the 8 foot chain link fence; I noted the barbed wire on top - slanted outward. There were even a couple of covered platforms erected about 4 feet higher than the top of the fence.

We walked into the arena and were escorted down a long tunneling hallway underneath permanent bleachers. There were notices posted here and there regarding betting. When we finally reached the dressing area, everyone was duly impressed by the fact that all the wrestlers had private dressing rooms. I looked around in ours and noticed that there were cabinets on the walls with a place to use a padlock on each door. My ex commented that they were quite thoughtful to have a place to secure things. I noticed that there were round holes about 2 inches in diameter cut in each cabinet door.

Please bear in mind that I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. A very civilized place, sheltered from the more perverse and primitive brutalities found in other places. My ex grew up in a small town in east Tennessee renowned for those primitive brutalities. Life Magazine even featured Newport, Tennessee on the cover and in an extensive feature article years ago (in the '70s I think) shortly after the Red Lantern Massacre.

I looked at the situation and started laughing. I couldn't believe what I'd gotten in the middle of, and I was doubly incredulous that I was the only one who'd figured it out. None of the guys had a clue. We were in a cock fighting arena! And the sheltered city-kid was the only one who caught on!

What can I say, life's strange. And you'd better believe I kept my mouth shut until we were long gone on the road for home! Any idea how easy it would be for someone to disappear in a place like that? Never to be found?

Brattina, I'll see if I can pull up a copy of the new felony code for animal cruelty and post it. You can use the text to nag your own state representatives to enact similar laws.

There have been several dog fighting rings busted in Houston, TX. I live about 45 minutes south of houston. The cops are always busting these people. There was one point where they rescued like 20 pit bulls. They looked so bad. They were in such bad shape. Those poor dogs had been teased and abused. I absolutely hate people like that!!!!!!

I only lived in the Bay Area for 3 years, but I recall them busting dog fight rings in Oakland, Daly City, and San Leandro. Cock fights got busted all the time in the South Bay and on the Peninsula. I hate them all, naturally, but those activities are by no means confined to the South or Appalachia.

I totally agree that the Feds should go RICO on these scumbags, but thats the problem with ALL laws these days...they don't do a lick of good unless someone enforces them. Legislature passes all kinds of pandering feel good laws that shut up the marching, chanting people with the signs and thats it. The chanters go on to their next beef and forget about their previous "OMG TERRABUL ISSEUS.". How 'bout a lil' follow up, guys?!

The problem is widespread and causing problems for thousands of dogs. They should have undercover pit bull trainers and fight promoters. Make a huge money event, and bust them all at one time

I lived in 5 different cities in for different states working for a company. All of them had bad areas and good areas. St. Louis was a great city to live in (except winter), but right across the river was the most violent saddest city you ever seen in East St. Louis.

Now, I live in east Tennessee, right next to Cocke County (yep, that's how it got it's name - Cocke County High School Fighting Gamecocks) home of the Red Lantern Massacre, and I have family all through eastern Kentucky and into West Virginia and southern Ohio. My Granddaddy actually stayed with one of my aunts and her family for several months once to help with a feud!?! This is an interesting area, but definitely the other side of the world!
Altogether a mixed bag of culture here . . . I've gone from planning to be a concert violinist and/or choreographer since I was 7 to having been involved with pro wrestling - once working with a show held in a cock fighting compound in eastern Kentucky! The weirdest part was that I (sheltered childhood and all) was the only one there who realized where we were! And you should see some of the costumes I've made for some of the guys. (lol)

I agree wholeheartedly with you on the protesters; you're utterly right about follow-up! That's important in everything - especially working with dogs!

Agreed. The people who partake of this brutal so-called sport have found too safe a haven on the internet. Does nobody in authority ever think far enough to wonder where these photographs come from? It should be possible to prosecute for posting the pictures, because that is fair proof that the person is involved in some way. Even supporters of dogfights should be punished.

Gillian think maybe you can go to that forum you like so much and beg to the owner to take down the pictures of my breed Russian Version FIGHTING?
And remove the posts from anchar a NY Breeder who sells his dogs there and states " he tests them aka fights them againest another dog"

You will find many references to fighting and pics of under CAO and under Temperament testing for CAO.

It would be greatly appreciated . Thanks in advance.
