Megan is my first dog, so when she experience a "reverse sneezing" episode tonight, it scared the crap out of me. :yikes: Really, I was ready to pull her into the car and speed off to vet. Luckily, I had a friend on the phone who calmed me down. (Also an owner of 3 dogs) I did call the vet, who also reassured me.

Wow....I really thought she was choking or having some sort of seizure or something. I've never heard of that before. Any one else shocked by this the first time?

Yes! Scared me to death when Lucas did it one night! I thought the same thing as you, that he was choking! Luckily, when he stopped a minute later I realized he was fine and found out what it was later.

But that is scary if you don't know what it is!

My mom's dog trudy would reverse sneeze so hard she would crack her chin on the floor,,every single time. I could see why it startled you.

Yup, first time is kinda scary, you don't know whats going on. I was in a panic that my dog couldn't breathe with all the contorting he was doing. After you're used to it...it'll become "Oh geez, do you have to do that in front of people?"

Okay, I have never had a dog reverse sneeze until we got into the papillons- they all did it. Is it a breed thing or do all dogs reverse sneeze?

Blaze was doing that last night too. It always scares me for some reason I had a dog at work do it while I was bathing it. I think it was also due to maybe some swallowed water while bating. But I was like "shoot I am jilly my neighbors dog" its a pekeignese

Lizzie reverse sneezes. Scared me to death the first time she did it, luckly, we were at the vet when she did it. He said nothing to worry about, it's common in dogs. *sigh*

Blaze just started doing it last night.

I think its mostly a small dog thing. Benji reverse sneezes occasionally, but Daisy never reverse sneezes. She regular sneezes at times. I can't remember ever having heard any larger dog reverse sneezing, but as Lizmo's post above demonstrates, it can happen.

We were once fostering a beagle who escaped her crate in the middle of the night, crawled into my parents closet and started reverse sneezing about 2am. My father thought the cat was in there dying! I found it a lot funnier then they did.

I remember the first time I heard a reverse sneeze. I had a freaking panic attack and rushed Wilma to the vet!!! I think they thought it was funny, but they were nice about it, and didn't charge mefor the visit. I think I was about thirteen. We were living around the corner from our vet's office then.

Oh, do NOT feel bad... the first time Auggie started reverse sneezing, I FLEW across the room in a panic, thinking he was choking. I opened his mouth and looked and looked and couldn't see anything. So I took him outside, thinking maybe he was trying to throw up... nope. Tried to get him to drink... nope.
Called the vet - too late, they were gone. Called the pet supply store Auggie's breeder's husband owns hoping he or she might be there so I could ask them about it - phone was busy. Called Auggie's breeder, start explaining to her what's happening in a horrible, terrified panic...
and she calmly says "Is he reverse sneezing?"
I pause. Dawning feeling of COMPLETE IDIOCY creeps in and forces the panic out. "Yes... yes he is."

*bashes head against wall*

Oh, by the way - Auggie's breeder recommended that I take two fingers and put them against his nostrils for a couple of seconds. Sometimes that forces them to take a breath a different way, and clears out the air passage. We're almost positive Auggie got a piece of grass up his nose and that's what started it. =P (Of course, I never got a chance to try this. In typical Auggie passion, as soon as I got somebody on the phone to talk to about it... he stopped of his own accord. +%(#&%#*$ DOG.)

The first time my folks (Me too, of course) heard it was when our old Beagle, Farfel was little. About a week after we got him, he suddenly started doing it, and we all freaked out, thinking he was dying or had snorted something up his nose. My mom called the vet and the vet's daughter who was answering the phone told us to just bring him him to get checked out. The vet was like 5 minutes away, and he said he seemed fine, but wasn't sure what we were talking about, then he did an almost perfect imitation of it! He told us what it was and not to worry. Good thing, as he did it several times a day for the rest of his life.

My present dogs only do it like a couple times a year, and when one does it, the other one goes into a major panic. Molly did it about a month ago, and King was running around like the vacuum cleaner was coming out. When King does it, Molly will try to jam her head into my armpit or crotch as hard as she can. When it's over, usually in less than 30 seconds, she always checks him over carefully. If he starts up again, she will react even more quickly and will shake like a jackhammer for about 5 minutes. For a couple of dogs that barely acknowledge each other at times, it's funny how if one of them shows any sign of illness whatsoever, the other one goes to pieces.
