When I move out on my own someday (hopefully soon), and actually have the use of a kitchen to prepare my dogs' meals, I want to at the very least put Gavroche on prey model raw, and possibly Logan as well.

Now, for convenience, I think I want to grind some meals, even though they won't get the dental benefits from it. But I can't realistically give them raw in the mornings and wait for them to finish unless it's ground/prepared already. I'm thinking ground raw in the morning, and regular raw/RMBs at night. Still haven't decided what to do for travel, but ground raw is a lot easier to pack and serve - either that or dehydrated raw, which is pretty pricey (travel is one of the reasons I hesitate to switch Logan over to raw).

So, do you have any suggestion for a grinder that will grind meat and bone? Manual or electric? At the moment I'm leaning towards manual because they're cheaper, but I don't know if they're diffiuclt to grind bone with. I DO want something that will grind bone, because I want it to be nutritionally the same whether it's ground or not. What worts of bone can I reasonable expect to grind? I'm assuming weight-bearign bones of large animals are out, of course, but what about, say, beef or pork rib bones? Ox tails? turkey necks/drumsticks/wings? Chicken quarters?

Thanks!

I would skip the grinder if you can, depending on the dog, you will be feeding boneless meals within a month or two with prey model raw. Remember the pmr guideline is 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% organ, so you will be feeding boneless meals along with bone in meals often. You could feed your boneless meals in the morning and the bone in meals at night.

Honestly I have two dogs and at first it took them 10-15 min to finish their bone in chicken meals, but within a couple of weeks on the diet they were so much faster at chewing the bone in meals, now they can finish a bone in turkey or chicken meal in about 3-4 min.

That is a good point about having a lot of boneless meals. I could try to work boneless in AM, and bones later on.

I don't know if Gavroche is just slow, but it seriously takes him half an hour to finish a chicken neck

They finish even bone in very quickly. Especially poultry. Dogs are pretty efficient with their chompers, unless its a huge complex meal. :)

Um, well, like I said, Gavroche takes his sweet little time. Not every dog eats exactly the same way. Chicken necks aren't that big or complex.
