i noticed she looked a bit thin to. but it might just be the pic.
trust me, she's not THAT thin... she could stand to gain a few pounds and I am working on that, she is just kind of hard to keep weight on. She eats 3-3 and a half cups of food a day! But you definatly cannot see all of her ribs... you can barely see like the last rib.

thats alright. i know you'd keep her weight up.

mac's really hard to keep weight on. she eats as much or more than our three big dogs because she is just so active. we had to up her food heaps because she looked a litle thin before.

i've met a few dobes that are hard to keep weight on. and we thnk mac might be mixed with a min pin so maybe its a breed thing. lol

She's a real cutie. She looks too thin in the one pic, but not in the others. It's probably just the way she's bending.

Not to hijack the thread...(omg Maya is sooo cute--and you can tell she just has so much personality!)

But Sizzledog what are Min pins derived from? I thought I read some where they were related to German Pinschers--is that right? So where German Pinschers used in the development of the Doberman, or no? Supposedly Manchesters where right? Just curious--of course people always think Zippy is a "miniature Doberman" or a min pin---I'm just curious about the relationship of all these dogs since so many people are confused about them....Thanks!

MinPins are a much older breed, established before the Doberman even came onto the dog scene. They were probably created from small, smooth coated terrier type dogs (including a forbearer to the German Pinscher), as well as possibly Italian Greyhound and *maybe* the smooth coated Dachshunds.

The Doberman Pinscher also has sketchy origins - their creator picked dogs from the area pound to create the ideal personal protection dog. There are several different breeds attributed to the formulation of the Doberman, but we're pretty sure the Thuringian Shepherd (now extict, this was an old-time cousin of the GSD) and the German Pinscher were two of the most prominent breeds used. Manchester Terriers and black Greyhounds were used to refine the Doberman.

I didn't realize min pins were so old. So if min pins were possibly used in the creation of the German Pinscher---and German Pinschers were used as one of the breeds that created the Doberman---then min pins might not be "totally" unrelated to Dobermans right?---even though its a very distant tenuous link...When people mention Zippy being a "miniature" Doberman" I just usually explain that Manchesters are one of the oldest terrier breeds and that Manchesters were one of many breeds used to create the Doberman---does that sound like a good way to explain it?

No - the German Pinscher is the ancestor of both the MinPin and the Doberman.

And really, all dogs are related - as long as you trace back far enough! ;)

Right--thats what I thought originally--German Pinschers were used to develop Min Pins--then I thought you were saying that min pins were actually the older breed-- So actually through the German Pinschers there is a connection of Min Pins to Dobermans--its just distant---Of course a lot of people more easily recognize Dobermans and just don't realize that they are the "newer" breed and the smaller dogs(Manchesters, German Pinschers) helped create the Doberman--not the other way around--- But like you said all the dogs are related at some point lol!

She's gorgeous!!! And the skinnyness is probably just the pic. She's not fat, but unless you're looking at her in person and feeling her ribs, unless she's emaciated it's hard to tell accurately. I have a thin layer of fat on me, and when I bend and stretch people have remarked that they can see my ribs; so even if she does have some chub you can probably see her ribs.

She is beautiful! I have to stop looking at her due to my need to get Riddick a buddy and she makes me want to start looking. I have to stop and remember Riddick is finally out of the major puppy stage and its fun to sleep through the night.

She doesn't look too thin at all.

Bodhi was always ribby - she is only just starting to fill out now, at 19 months. She could eat, put weight on her tummy, and not her ribs. Never concerned me, she was 100% healthy, and 100% fit. She's growing into those ribs slowly but surely!!

Maya's only a young girl, she'll fill out a bit before long!
