A .22 is what Kharma got shot in the foot by, only the bullet that hit her was one of the loads that fragment. Mav was really lucky. You might ask your landlord if there's ever been a problem there before.

And you could write a column on your dog being shot . . . might make someone think twice before trying it again if it was on purpose.
There's no room in this week's I don't think. I'll see if I can for next week's.

I will talk to my landlord but he's only ever use the house as a vacation home. I don't know how much he'd know. I do know that there has been at least one hunter at our house asking if he could go on our land. I said no. And the women next door said our dogs go over there but they don't bother them. They were very hillbilly type but super nice.

Poor boy, Ill add to the extra attention and give him some ear scratchins from me.

What hunting season is it that somebody could mistake Mav for game?

Track down whoever did it and shoot them back! See how much they like it! Gaw, it's called "look where your aiming", it isn't that hard.

I don't know. People shoot anything including trailers, cars, I'm pretty sure they mistook him for a ... dog ... or bear. He was probably on someone's property and they got pissed.

im glad he will be ok -

but please, let this be a lesson - do NOT leave your dogs outside unattended, and ESPECIALLY do not let them wander around loose. its dangerous, and this could have turned out MUCH worse. if you cant supervise the dogs, dont leave them out!

Tell him to aim just a few inches toward the center line....

We get hordes of drunk hunters here during hunting season. Every year someone's dog gets shot. They get so plastered they'll shoot anything that moves.

Poor Mav. Good thing Newfies are tanks with fur!

Poor Mav !!! Poor you !!! My Bushwacker was shot once (buckshot) and was laying in the drive way ... the only place I would have noticed him. I rushed him to the vets and he was fine. Years later, an Xray, for another medical problem, showed that he was full of buckshot. Yes, I agree about dogs not being loose. This was in the country, 8 acres of wooded area and many years ago .

It's not an ideal situation but he can't stay in the house unless I shave him. He gets to hot. And steve and I are gone from 9 am to 1am some days. The other two dogs are ok inside. They love it really but mav can't take it. I make him go inside most days. We do need a good fence but we rent and I can't afford it. The yard is fenced but for horses. If you've read any of my other threads you'll know I'm looking into fencing it properly.

I agree with Doberkim, he shouldn't be out wandering loose. As you can see, it's extremely dangerous. Your dog can easily be injured or killed if outside loose and unsupervised. It's in his, and your, best interests to keep him inside. What if someone decided to take aim at his head/face?

Huh? You mean Maverick is an outside dog? And you're unfenced?

as sometimes has to happen. All our dogs are outside all day (8am-3pm) they have secure fencing but thats it. you cant keep a dog inside all day with no choice to get out. Thats why I dont agree with crating.

I am glad you are looking for fencing, sometimes it seems like everything is against you and the ideal situation isnt turning up. Sure it couldve been worse, but it wasnt. it might have even taught him a lesson. Maybe he wont go wandering again (if that is what caused the problem in the first place) maybe someone came onto YOUR property and tried to shoot a "nuisance dog" maybe a nearby owner was loosing poultry and was ready to blame it on a waterdog? thast possible also isnt it?
