This is a very long story. Twice as long as when people normally say that!

I got Maverick, my newfieX, less than a year ago. He was about three months old and came from the SPCA. He is so special. He has so much personality and tries so hard.

Well, this story is about what a little baby he is. Even our cats beat up the 130lb dog!

My BF and I would take Maverick for long walks around the seawall by English Bay when I was living in Vancouver. We lived in an apartment and he would got out for at least two 1-hr walks a day. Usually longer. I'm sure you can imagine this bundle of energy that we would let loose.

When the tide was out we'd walk along the rocks and he wade in the water (he was scared to swim then) and dig up all kinds of shelled creatures.

My BF liked to walk along the seawall edge when it was too rocky to walk on the beach. Some of you may know this wall. Picture:

You can see the edge between the walkway and the Bay. That's where my BF walked. And of course, Maverick always wanted to be just like his daddy so he would walk up there too behind him.

We used to walk quite late at night. It was a popular place to go and if we went after 11pm there would be very few people. Maverick could play offleash without people getting paranoid about the giant puppy or him getting run over by bladers.

So, one night Steve is walking along the edge and Maverick is right behind him. We couldn't see Maverick at all because he's all black and there are only the city lights in the distance. We here Maverick yelp.

He's fallen over onto the rocks. The tide was out and he's laying on the rocks probably 8 feet below.

I'm sure he's seriously hurt. He's howling and yelping and whooping up a storm. Steve climbs down there and helps maverick get up. He feels his legs and makes him walk. There's no obvious signs of broken/bruised/bleeding parts. Steve half drags half pushes Maverick up to me. Not an easy feat. Maverick never helps. He thinks he's a little dog. :) And I'm making a huge fuss over Maverick. he's still whimpering and whining and keeps laying down like he's seriously hurt. I'm fawning all over him. Steve tells me to leave him alone because he's fine and I"m just making it worse.

Finally, I agree to start walking back (there was no other option but to walk from where we were). Maverick decides to walk behind me and everytime I turn around he's limping and looking sadly at me. I'm really worried of course.

After a couple of minutes I look at Steve and see he's laughing his @ss off. I don't think there's anything funny about the situation and I'm about to chew Steve out for not taking it more seriously but I give him a chance to explain.

Apparently, maverick is being a big ham and when I'm not looking he's playing and trotting along behing me but as soon as I turn around he's starts limping again so I come over and put him and make a big fuss. What a brat! He's so funny.

That was just the beginning of Maverick's little hysterics.

One day he was playing in an off-leash park with some other pups. People are always afraid of him with their dogs because of his size even though he's the one that gets beat up all the time.

He's playing with this one dog who gets tired of his puppy antics and tells him off. Maverick is so upset at being scolded by this dog that he throws himself on the ground and I don't know how he did it but he looked like he was having a seisure. He's also howling and yelping. The woman who owned the other dog was sure her dog had hurt him or something. I grab him (and not having learned yet) check to see if he's bleeding or something. He's not of course. Someone offered to drive us to the vet and it took probably 15 minutes to get him to stop whimpering. After he just got up and started playing again. Later we walked over to the other side of the park and the people there asked us what happened to our dog and if he was ok.

He doesn't really do that anymore although he is a big baby about knots in his hair, his tail getting stepped on...

I really think this dog is special.

This is a funny picture of Maverick that I took on Christmas day. He's just a year old but he looks like an old man in the pic. The bad hair cut is because I let him get really matted and ended up cutting most of it short. It was easier that picking it all out. He wouldn't stand for that anyway. I've learned my lesson he now gets brushed several times a week.

ROFL! Saje, Maverick and Shiva must never be allowed to trade techniques! And you really, REALLY don't want any input from Kharma the Drama Queen; she's much smoother. When we first brought her home she was so much smaller than Shiva, and even Bimmer. I was worried at first that big, boisterous Shiva might overwhelm her. Silly me.

Charley let Shiva out of the house first thing when we brought Kharma home. I had this darling little 12 week old pup sitting at my feet after an hour ride home in the car, when out bounds 6 month old Shiva in top form - nearly 100 pounds of her even then. Runs right up to Kharma to look at her and sniff her, wanting to bowl her over and examine this new toy thoroughly.

Shiva was much taken aback when the new toy lunged at her, puppy teeth bared and put her back on her heels. Kharma wouldn't let Shiva come to me for comfort either.

So much for the little puppy being overwhelmed.

I learned more about Kharma's personality very quickly. She and Shiva were playing in the living room. They'd been playing together very well after the initial meeting, sleeping together, cuddling. Shiva was just exemplary with the new baby. Every now and then she'd get a little boisterous when they were playing, Kharma would yelp and I'd just tell Shiva to be careful and that was the end of it. Well, they were playing and I was busy. Kharma yelped and I told Shiva to take it easy. Kharma yelped again and gave a long, heartbreaking wail. Of course I dropped what I was doing and swung around, yelling at Shiva not to hurt Kharma. But what I saw when I got turned around was Shiva laying on the floor, belly down, with Kharma on top, pulling and yanking at the skin around poor Shiva's neck. But Kharma was wailing like SHE was the one being mauled!

That's when Kharma earned the title "Drama Queen."

Did you catch the thread Debi started when her Hammie was acting like he'd hurt his leg? He was pulling the same thing on her that Maverick pulled on you, and like Maverick, was fine as long as she wasn't looking! Who ever said dogs don't lie? :D

Ha ha ha. They are so funny! They have such personalities. Hearing stuff like that makes me wonder how people can't love animals! :)

I haven't read that thread but I'll have to look it up. Where do I have to go to see pics of your pups?

The pics are in the Dog Photos in the Members' Gallery. Just look under "r" and you'll find my album on that page. I've got to get this last role of film processed and digitized so I can post some more recent photos. The girls are getting BIG!
