Both my Poodle puppies just turned one. When Maurice was really young, he had no trouble going up and down stairs and no problem with the hardwood floor. Now, starting a couple months ago, he began having a problem with both. LOL. I haven't done much about it because I figure, oh well, he'll go when he's ready. I did get several throw rugs for the kitchen area because that was causing him frustration when he couldn't get places. So, he would go a few steps and get to the safety zone, then a few more steps and so on. I spread them apart a little more and now he will actually trot along the hardwood floor, even next to the rugs, not on them. But they HAVE to be there just the same. :D Sometimes he steps on one, sometimes he goes along side.

The stairs....I don't know what happened...if he got scared or got hurt when I wasn't looking. He'll do a few steps by the patio but not the full stair case. I guess I could work with him, but I really don't care at this point. What a character. And he's the one who's usually the bravest one of the two about most everything else.

Did any of your puppies ever go along fine with something, then for no apparent reason chicken out? Did you do anything or did they just figure it out on their own eventually?

I remember mine going through phases at different ages. I bet Maurice will eventually go up the stairs when he's ready and doesn't feel like he will fall or whatever is going on in his mind. You could always put a treat on each step increasing the steps that have treats every day or so to see if it will help him to want to go up them again.

Limit basically turned into a different dog during the longest, most intense fear period ever. I didn't coddle him, but I also didn't always push the issue. I would push what I thought we could get past and leave other BIG things. He is now coming around (it took about 1.5 years...sigh).

Just keep your patience. He will definitely but probably regaining his confidence. He must have some slipping experiences before. He's just being careful. ;)
