Hi...hoping someone can help me with a white standard I've rescued...his fur mats and is matted right now...I've started clipping him and am using a 7F blade which is not making it through his mats and I"m having difficulty...since its winter, I didn't want to shave him down to a 10 blade but am thinking I have no choice. My black standard is much easier to groom and does not give me the amount of difficulty which my white one does...

Any suggestions? Do I need to take him down to a 10? Will that ruin his coat?

I'm not sure what to do with him right now...thanks!

If your dog is dirty and you're using a finishing blade, try switching to brand new 8 roughout. A used 7F, unless it's very sharp isn't really meant to do kennel cuts on an unbathed coat. You will have to bathe more often and condition, condition, condition if you intend to grow the coat out after a kennel cut. My miniature white lives on a farm, rolls in dead things, horse and goat poop, rips thru sticker bushes... anything he can find. The first time I fell behind on his weekly grooming I found myself brushing matts and having to take the coat much shorter than I'd intended. I'll try to find pictures of him on one of these Chaz threads. It's a lot of work! Good luck.

I'm challenged on computer, picture of my poodle is on thread "My pictures" by Otch1, Dog, general chat?? He's a mess just 2 days after each groom. Don't envy having to care for one 3 times his size. Lol

Otch1 - your poodle is gorgeous...I have horses and a farm as well and can't fathom keeping my dog's coats that long:lol-sign: I'm not showing them, however, I do like them to look nice and well kept...typically I keep them in a short cut throughout the body and blend in the legs so they look full enough but not too long...I guess that is the kennel cut...not sure of the name...I like to keep them shorter in the summer than the winter because they are so active and outdoors in the Virginia humidity. My black standard can't handle the heat very well...

I've pulled up the website about wet shaving and will read it...Thank you!

Question .... when is a skip tooth blade use vs. something like a 7F and then vs. a regular 7 blade for instance? What is the difference between the blades?

Thanks!

Skip tooth bade works better on a dirty matted dog, it gets threw them much easier. It should only be used before bath, it doesn't finish well. The regular blade works better for finishing. Just be careful though, you can nick the dog much easier with the skip tooth, especially if the dog is matted.

If it was me I'd clip the dog down with a #10 blade. It will grow back just fine and will be less stressful on the dog which should be the main focus right now being he was just rescued. Just keep him in a coat when he goes outside.

I'm with Giny on this one (beautiful dogs, Giny!!) there's not a hugh difference between an 8 and a 10, the job will go quicker and cleaner and you'll start with a fresh coat to build on for spring. I want to see pictures!

Thanks all...I did end up using a 10 in most places...was able to save a good portion of his head and the tail...after he was dry, I went over him with a 7f to get the excess evened up...he looks good...and is much happier. Its not really cold here yet so he's not uncomfortable, but I have dug out the blankets for him to wear!

I'll have to figure out pics on here...is there anything special we have to do?

the only safe way to get through mats is with a number 10 the 7 could gouge him if you try to push it through plus it will pull and make him hate grooming and hurt
he might need a sweater or coat but the good thing about poodles is they grow their hair back really really fast and in 2 weeks he will have a nice layer of warm fuzz
