I've always dreamed of a French Mastiff (can't spell the last part of their real name off the top of my head.) It's on my list for one day when I'm more stable.

It varies, I believe. Also has a bit to do with breeding, as does most of anything.

OE Mastiffs are not very active. They like relaxing walks once they become adults. Some other Mastiff breeds like the Presa can be very active.

I'm a big bullmastiff fan now, I definetly want one one day but I want more dog experience first.

Also love the neo's and the tibetans (sp?) but don't know if I'll ever own them

I looooove Tibetan Mastiffs.
But, I'm going to get a more active breed first so I can get into dog sports. And then I'll get my ultimate dream breed.. the TM :D

I would love to own a bullmastiff some day. A red one. By far, my fave mastiff breed. I love their history. And the fact that they are just drop dead STUNNING.

I think I've said this before, but...

My neighbor used to own one. An unaltered male. He was friendly, but very confident in himself. A dog who is not scared or spooked by anything. Laid back and stubborn. A doberman went after him once and he just gave him a stare down and then shrugged and walked off after the dog backed down, like he didn't want to waste his time getting his feathers in a ruffle over it. I loved his personality. Sadly, his owner let him walk the streets. He would invite himself in our house if the back door was open, and make himself at home like he owned the place, lol. Plop his but down and watch a little TV with us.

I love the history of the bullmastiff, way too interesting.
And I love how they are a giant, heavy breed but still looking athletic and still look like they could do what they were originally bred for.

I own a 4yr old Bullmastiff bitch. I've only had her about 4 months but she is an absolute sweetie. She is small even for a bitch, 23ins and about 37kg, and she does have her faults although she is KC reg...I think she's gorgeous anyway! I'll post pics with a friend's Boxer pup for comparison [although he is only 9 months, he's a big boy]

Temperament wise, she is lovely. Great with people, I highly doubt she would do what she was bred for in terms of intruders, but she will bark at strange noises outside etc. She is still building her confidence outside, as she can get slightly jumpy but I don't think this is particularly usual for the breed. She is very lazy, and likes spending most of her time cuddled up on the sofa. She is an intelligent dog and has picked up new commands and training quickly, but can be stubborn when she doesn't want to do something or doesn't think it's worth her while!

She is great with other dogs, usually very submissive, but the most I've seen her do is give a warning growl to the aforementioned Boxer pup when he was...well...doing what Boxers do and getting a bit much for her!

Drool-wise, I don't think she's *that* bad but then I am used to it I suppose! She drools a lot when people are eating, or sometimes when she's playing or in the car...and she's messy as hell having a drink, but just keep a drool cloth handy when people are visiting! Oh, and I have leather sofas as well, they would get soooo dirty if they were fabric...but of course not everyone lets their dogs [especially big ones] on sofas!

Anyway, some pictures:

[still in the collar she came with, can't WAIT til her new one from Paco Collars arrives!]

Really need to get some more, but my camera is playing up.

Also, this is my old dog Cleo, she was a Bullmastiff x Dogue de Bordeaux. She was beautiful! A lot of the things I can say about her temperament wise won't be so accurate because sadly I had to rehome her when she was a little over a year old due to a relationship breakdown, and the only place I could live already had 5 dogs including one that was DA.

She was very easy to housetrain, and learned other basic commands quickly. She was more aloof with strangers, but a massive softie with family and friends. She also loved being on the sofa, but was more lively [as I said, this could be purely because she was a pup, I don't know] and also very good with other dogs. I think she would be a big girl now, as she was Lola's size at under a year old. Her mum [the Bullmastiff] was huge. God I miss her so much!

I also shared a house with a gorgeous blue Cane Corso bitch. She had previously lived in kennels from a breeding home, so housetraining was fun...seemed as though there was a lake in the kitchen some mornings! She had obviously been treated quite heavy-handed in the past, but just harsh words were more than enough. She did not tolerate taking commands from strange men especially, but still a very sweet dog.

Other than being totally besotted with the Fila, if I were going to choose another Mastiff breed, I would absolutely go to one NOT recognized by the AKC.
Well, then the presa canario would be at the top of my list. And why do you say that? Excuse my ignorance. I'm assuming because the breeds get watered down?

Boerbull for sure! A fantastic homegrown dog and a stunning temprement with good gaurding ability. Unfortunately, like anywhere, you get badbreeding. But if I live on a large property one day, I want a Boerbull!
