Well, I like to run and I can be pretty active (when I can will myself to leave the couch) but have always wanted to start more of an activity

I found this martial arts place near me in Boston http://www.redlinefightsports.com/
I got a coupon thingy for the first class and they have great reviews on yelp

but.. big but here.. I am non confrontational, I can barely open a peanut butter jar (I suck at strength training), I am 5'2, and I'm kind of worried about not fitting in and kind of just sucking so bad I am thrown out or something lol

but I'd love to have an interesting workout and learn how to fight! lol not that I'd fight anyone but still, you never know.

Do you think it would be a good overall workout/training program anyway?

Oh and what do you think of the place? There are a few in Boston but I kind of like mixed martial arts better

*cough* plus I wouldn't have to wear those ugly outfits *cough* lol

I've thought about it, but the money always ended up going to dog stuff so I've never tried it. My husband loved it when he did it and it was a heck of a workout. He said there were some pretty impressive women who were regulars at the last place.

My boyfriend took Kickboxing when he was working between his "highschool/college" gig. He LOVED it and he said he had never been in better shape, even when he played Lacrosse. Since he was a beginner, he was in a class with a whole bunch of older, out of shape people - so don't worry about fitting in or not. They won't stick you with a bunch of upper level people. ;)

If you have any specific questions about kickboxing you want me to ask him, I can relay. :)

Though if all you're looking for is a good work out, a crossfit class would cover you there. That's what we teach at our dojo along with cardio kickboxing. Martial arts itself isn't the best workout because it's based on technique and repetition of small moves to make up a bigger picture of self defense. Kickboxing is different and isn't necessarily a martial art when done for fitness. If you're not sparring with another person, kickboxing is just a fun way to relieve stress and stay in shape. If you find a good enough place to do it at, you might get good instruction on proper hitting form though :)
