So Venice was diagnosed with marijuana toxicity today - her birthday prezzie to me.

I walked her offleash at a spot nearby, it's out in the bush and pretty out of the way. A couple times she ran out of sight but always came back quickly when I called. We hung out with my friend for a bit and headed home. Towards the end of the walk I noticed she was dripping urine, which I thought was really odd. A couple minutes later, I noticed she had a bit of an unsteady gait and was swaying whenever she stopped to sniff.

Got home, took her temperature (normal). She was standing stiffly with her legs braced, head wobbling, and looking like she had trouble keeping her balance. Couldn't get an appt at our normal clinic so we drove to the e-vet. She was having trouble staying awake in the car and still dribbling urine. Terrified me.

We didn't do the actual test for THC toxicity but supposedly all her symptoms were pointing to it. Her pulse was strong and regular, temperature normal, and she was responding well to neurological stimulation so we took her home to rest. She's feeling better, but still sluggish and wanting to rest.

Anybody experienced this before? We have no weed in the house, so she must have picked it up outside. I don't think someone would have dropped buds way out there in the bush. We've had dogs in the clinic I used to work at that would get into brownies or that type of thing, but I don't think she would have found brownies way out in the bush like that.

The place seems like a likely spot to grow marijuana but have you ever heard of a dog actually eating the growing plant?

I know of two dogs that were treated for marijuana toxicity and both made full recoveries. :) One was a suspected case (owners rushed their dog in due to "heat stroke" on a cool day, the symptoms didn't all add up, and they never came back for the dog...) and one was a confirmed case (owner was visiting relatives over the holidays and they had some fun lol).

And...that's all I know. Unhelpful.

I'm not sure about eating the actual plant, but you might want to NOT walk her there anymore... if somebody is actually growing there, I've heard they might not be, um, very friendly to people wandering around nearby... and a dog might not fare any better. =/ Scary.

Someone who shall remain nameless forced a bud of MJ down Strider's throat, the size of a golf ball. It triggered severe epilepsy which continues to this day. That's why I had him neutered, as I don't know if the MJ completely caused it, or if there was some dormant genetic predisposition for it. None of his relatives have epilepsy though.

Also, that was a really high dose and he's a sight hound which are more sensitive to chemicals, so his extreme reaction to it might be partly due to those factors.

Holy crap. I would never be able to forgive that I don't think. Poor Strider.

My friend who works at one of the two 24/7 emerg clinics in the city says they've seen SO many cases in the last two weeks. A couple who, same as me, didn't have any in the house (or didn't admit to it) and took their dog for an offleash walk in the woods. Kind of suspicious.

She was back to normal the next day, I'm just totally perplexed by this.

We did have one (small breed dog) come in on emergency once to be treated. The owners would not admit to anything the dog might have gotten into, but the vet and tech heard them discussing the dog having gotten into marijuana when they were approaching the room to discuss treatment. The dog did make a full recovery

My ex boyfriend used to grow (legally), and my dogs were always interested in eating the plants. /end of my information on the subject. They did like eating plants in general/chewing on trees.

Vibes for an uneventful recovery!

Mr. Boats has had three spinal surgeries and has chronic and sometimes debilitating pain due to those surgeries. He takes medicinal marijuana daily and has a card issued by the state of Rhode Island that approves him to do so. He keeps all of that stuff out of the reach of the guys. To be truthful, my dogs are very picky about stuff they will eat, they don't touch house plants or garden plants. We're not that concerned they will eat his "medicine"...but we don't take chances either.

I think as more and more states approve the use of medical marijuana and recreational use of marijuana, the vets will see more and more of Marijuana toxicity in animals. It really should be treated as any other medication and kept out of the reach of kids and pets.

(After learning more and more about the drug and seeing how much it does help my husband deal with his pain. I really don't see that big of a deal over weed. The endless supply of narcotics he has been using for 10 years from his surgeon started to damage his liver and that's what made us seek out other options for pain control like medical marijuana. Personally, I classify weed in the same category as alcohol and it's only going to be a matter of time before it's legalized. I don't use marijuana myself...but I do drink alcohol. It wasn't that long ago that alcohol was illegal too.)

A friend of mine's daughter ended up getting into some not too long ago.
Same thing, rushed her to the e-vet, but they pegged it immediately as they came through the doors. "That dog is stoned"

From what I understand, they emptied the dogs stomach and she made a quick, full recovery.

Still terrifying though. My 2 have been around it, but never showed interest in eating it.

I had a friend of my fiance call one night in a panic because his dog ate 7 grams of hash, other than being a little drunken seeming for the night he was fine. 75 or so pound dog.

Curious how a vet would judge it is thc vs. a million other possibilities though?

Izzie is a total pot puppy, she loves it and will cuddle right up to anyone smoking it or rolling a doob. She has never tried to eat it though, i think she just enjoys the smell and maybe the people we're usually around when it's around lol.

There is a test for THC (not sure if it is blood, urine, or what) but it wasn't offered to me.

Apparently the dripping urine is pretty much the tell-tale symptom. Other toxins don't seem to cause that, or so my tech friend says.
